This poll, like other recent polls, shows a competitive race between center-right National and center-left Labour, with New Zealand First being in the position of kingmaker.
New Zealand First has a centrist position on economics, is moderately conservative on social issues, it desires restrictions on immigration and the preservation of benefits for senior citizens and other nationals.
The leader of New Zealand First, Winston Peters, is part-Maori. I think it is fair to say New Zealand First desires a uniquely New Zealand nation and culture that affirms both its English and Maori roots. We can call this the integrationist position. The contrary position is for Maori people to kept as an identified minority, including for Maori children to be taught in the Maori language.
