The majority of Catholics are not Democrats. At least not in the past 20 years or so. The hostility of Democrats and liberals to all things Christian has penetrated the brains of even the most stubborn, mostly of Irish descent. Catholics.
The German-Catholic population of central Minnesota is decidedly not Democrat. Try sitting in one of the tiny farm villages’ locale pubs and praising Hillary Clinton or bashing Trump. You will get a good lecture on the evil Democrats in Washington DC and in the Twin Cities.
You must only be looking at white Catholics who are a bare majority Republican, only in recent years. Otherwise, Obama winning the Catholic vote in both 2008 and 2012 would be a real puzzle. Catholics in the US as a whole are not conservative, as difficult as that may be for you to accept. Voting records demonstrate this.
As far as Minnesota, maybe that’s attributable to moderating Lutheran influence.
