Gutierrez defends attacks on Kelly, calls Trump's chief of staff 'mean'

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) on Tuesday defended his attacks on White House chief of staff John Kelly, calling President Trump's senior aide "mean" for standing aside while the administration rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

"He’s a politician, okay, not a general. I don’t see a uniform. He’s a politician who works for Donald Trump,” said Gutiérrez, according to The Washington Post .

Kelly and Gutierrez have been trading barbs since last week, when Gutierrez called the former four-star Marine general "a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear."

Gutierrez took issue over the White House's announcement that it would end DACA, an Obama-era program that gave work permits and deferral from deportation to nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.

As secretary of Homeland Security earlier this year, Kelly repeatedly pledged sympathy toward DACA recipients and told members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus he was their best ally in the Trump administration.

Still, Gutierrez and other critics have lashed out after the administration announced last week that it would phase out DACA.

Kelly, who has maintained that Congress should legislate a solution for DACA recipients, shot back Monday in an email to Fox News.

“As far as the congressman and other irresponsible members of Congress are concerned, they have the luxury of saying what they want as they do nothing and have almost no responsibility,” Kelly said. “I begged and pleaded with them. They did exactly nothing.”

The administration's plan to wind down DACA after six months has put pressure on Congress to take action to protect the affected immigrants.

But Congress has yet to coalesce around a proposal for so-called Dreamers – the thousands of DACA recipients and other undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children.

Gutierrez said Friday he was building a coalition of Democrats who would refuse to vote on budget and debt ceiling deals in December unless a solution for Dreamers were passed by then.

Kelly took credit Monday for the six-month reprieve, saying the program's shaky legal footing was responsible for ending it.

“Trump didn't end DACA, the law did. That said, I worked and succeeded to give the Congress another six months to do something,” Kelly said in his email to Fox News.

Gutierrez deflected Kelly's defense Monday, saying he understands why his criticism of the well-respected Marine general-cum-politician rubbed some the wrong way.

"What could be more mean and more vicious than to say you’ve got six months to pack up your bag and to leave the United States of America?” said Gutiérrez.

General John Kelly must be having quite a time. After a wonderfully successful military career, he's in a whole other universe. He inherited out-of-control press maniacs, minor politicians who shoot from the lip at will, petulant run amuck spoiled brats staffing the WH, a President who has been known to make decisions spontaneously, and traitors who leak things whenever they feel like it.

If this had been a situation comedy, who would've believed it? President Trump might be able to drain the swamp. It's going to take military discipline to do it.

Heard a story (part of one,to be exact) just today that this pig has placed half his family on the government payroll.

Sounds to me as if the DoJ might want to give this a look.

DACA illegals are lucky!

I was here on a legal student visa to attend U of Iowa, in 1962. When I finished my degree, I was LEGALLY allowed up to 18 months to gain practical experience in my field of study. The clerk at University gave me the wrong form to apply for the first 6 months work permit. He should have known better. I knew nothing about immigration procedures. The Immigration department naturally rejected my application due to the wrong form submitted and gave me 48 HOURS to leave the country!

So DACA illegals are lucky they have 6 months to prepare for alternatives. What can one do in 48 hours? My professor intervened on my behalf with immigration, and immigration gave me the 6 month work permit, to be extended maximum 2 times for 6 months each, if my employer did not fire me.

Guitierrez is a butt pimple in the great mass of humanity. He is worthy of complete and total ignoring by all. Ignoring the ignorant. Works for me.
