I’m not enthusiastic about offering personal information to any of them to get a freeze or an alert. It may be foolhardy, but I’m not going to do anything until more information is known.
You can freeze your account with each bureau, that will prevent any credit lines from being opened. But, you will need to unfreeze them if you want to get a new credit line, and that runs ~$30 per agency, or you can find out which agency will be consulted by the lender and unfreeze just the one.
I am considering it.
My wait and see is, I assume I got hit with Equifax since I always do annualcreditreport.com. I know someone who get hit in the OPM breach, yahoo and HSBC, and probably Equifax too. Similar info compromised between OPM and Equifax. So far they have done no freeze, just keeping a watch with the free annual credit monitoring and a lot of credit cards now offer the monthly credit score, so a big move on that number would be a red flag to go check one of the Bureaus.
For HSBC, someone tried ordering a lot of drugs (pharma) online. Card cancelled, no liability.
For yahoo, someone tried changing the address of their cell-phone provider and ordering a couple iPhones to the new address. Since the change updates get texted right to the phone, that didn't work so well. No liability and I hope the cell company arrested the bozos, since they gave up the drop, hahaha.
For OPM... nothing at all that I've heard yet. And now Equifax...
Yup, they are! And none of them will be held accountable either. Not a one.
I was impacted by the Equifax breach. Locked all three credit reports and upped my Lifelock to their top package at a cost of $30/mo. for Lifelock, and another $30 to lock my three credit reports.
Equifax's lax security is now going to cost me $360 this year in addition to the $30 I paid to lock my credit reports, and another $30 anytime I need to unlock them when I apply for credit - which I'll be doing as I sell my old home (part of the divorce settlement) and have to buy a new one with a small mortgage.
Where do I go to get the ongoing $360 I'm going to be out every year and the $60 I'll be out for locking and unlocking my credit report when needed?
