Young, undocumented and full of dreams: 4 stories

In Minnesota, more than 6,200 individuals have been granted DACA status. A similar number might have qualified for the program but never applied.

And some, like 29-year-old Alejandra Cruz, were never eligible.

She was 20 when she entered the United States, and DACA covers only those who arrived before reaching age 16. The vulnerability that DACA recipients are feeling is familiar territory to her, though she insists she is not afraid.

"This country depends on the immigrant community," she said. "And this country needs to recognize that."

She doesn't usually volunteer that she's undocumented and not enrolled in DACA, but she says she wants to stop hiding and start organizing. She recently joined Movimiento Cosecha, a national group that seeks permanent protection for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

"I like to do this type of job because it creates hope for my community," she said. "I can see how my people are fighting for what we deserve, justice and liberation. We bring many good things to this country. We bring beauty. We build up the economy. We create jobs. We do a lot for this country, so it's not fair that they do this to us."

It's been two weeks since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the end of the federal program that gave children of undocumented immigrants protected status. DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, has allowed hundreds of thousands to work, attend college or serve in the U.S. military.

The ethnic or racial breakdown of DACA recipients isn't known, but Twin Cities immigration attorneys say the undocumented youth they represent come not only from Latin America, but also from Europe, Asia, and Africa.

It helps mightily to mentally substitute ‘commune’ for ‘community’ as that is exactly what these people are striving to establish.

‘I can see how my people are fighting for what we deserve, justice and liberation’

Liberation, properly defined, would be a return to your homeland. Adios.

She was 20 when she entered the United States

In other words she's a Mexican criminal who believes she has the right to break any American law she feels like.

Last I checked, twenty years old is two years more than the adulthood.

Maybe it's different in the wondrous land called Mexico...

All the NPR affiliates have been beating this drum since the first rumblings of a DACA reversal.

Too bad, so sad. Not! Get your paperwork in order and get to the BACK of the line, CHEATERS!

Yet the organization name is in spanish - doesn't she want to be inclusive?

She has problems with America and Americans? Oh really? She should try and break the border of any other country on earth—and see what the hell happens to her ass.

Sick and tired of seeing these bastards literally getting paid by the U.S. govt to break our laws, trash our economy and states and neighborhoods, take all the jobs, ship U.S. dollars back home to South America in cross-border transactions, ruin job prospects for Americans, and kill our culture and cause mayhem on the roads with their insane driving habits and then steal our social security numbers and vote in our elections and organize and demonstrate in our streets and then, after all of that, they give us, the citizens of America, the FINGER?

How many ways can you spell ENEMY INVASION?

Ask the families of the 92,000 Americans who have been killed by illegal aliens what those vermin have brought. They would no doubt say misery and inconsolable grief because they have been separated from their loved ones through no fault of their own or those who have been killed.

We don’t see any “beauty” in gangs and rapists squatting in our country illegally.

Does anyone here have any personal experience connected to violating a sovereign nation's immigration, residency or labor laws? I've done some foreign travel in my day and,to the best of my knowledge, have never violated any such laws.

Not Canada's laws...or Britain's...or Japan's...or Mexico's...or any other nation's laws!

If Donald and the Congress fail to re-instate the Rule of Law in this country with DACA and put an end to illegal Executive Orders, he will have reneged on his promise and our nation is gone.

Mercy and justicev is NOT demonstrated by blanket winks and nods, like the DACA program, at law breaking. Mercy is shown by equity conferred on hard cases on an individual basis, after a hearing.

86 was a huge mistake. DACA retention will be equally so.

can you image?

My daughter took a train from Hungary into Austria yesterday. Midroute, they stopped the train and announced, "Get your passports out".

Officials came on and went through every person on that trains papers. With a fine tooth comb. Looking at visas, etc.

I said, "they must be Nazis"
