French President Emmanuel Macron said at the United Nations this week that renouncing the Iran nuclear deal would be “a grave error.”
“Not respecting it would be irresponsible, because it is a good agreement that is essential to peace at a time where the risk of an infernal conflagration cannot be excluded,” he told the General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
The remarks were an indirect riposte to President Trump, who earlier the same day called the deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.”
“We cannot abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program,” Trump said. “Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it — believe me.”
Before his speech, Macron spoke with Trump and met with Iranian President Hasan Rouhani in New York.
“Our commitment to non-proliferation has resulted in a strong, robust agreement to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons,” he told the General Assembly.
“Denouncing the agreement on the Iranian nuclear would be a heavy mistake,” he added, but also said he would keep “the door open” for further negotiations for the post-2025 period. …
