NEW YORK (Reuters) - The mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, resigned on Monday, a city official said, after the mayor pleaded guilty last week to a state criminal conspiracy charge that he ordered city employees to perform work at a warehouse leased by his family members.

Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres, 58, pleaded guilty on Friday in state superior court to second degree conspiracy as part of an agreement in which prosecutors will recommend a five-year prison sentence, state Attorney General Christopher Porrino said.

The plea agreement also required that Torres relinquish his office, never again hold a government job in New Jersey and repay Paterson $10,000 for the time city workers spent at the private warehouse.

What a dummy. He didn’t pay off the DA. Otherwise he’d still be in office corrupting away.

Has corruption alone EVER been a reason for a Democrat mayor to resign, especially in New Jersey? There has to be a secondary and far more compelling reason. Even a dead woman or a live boy found in the miscreant’s bed is no longer enough. Maybe the Mafia only needed to send over a severed horse’s head.

This is a truly “man bites dog” story, an almost unique circumstance.

By elimination, he had to be Democrat. If it were a Republican (in Paterson, of all places?), it would have been in the headline.

I’d rather talk about racism in the NFL. More drama there.

No party affiliation mentioned in the first 3 paragraphs. Safe to assume he’s a Democrat.

He didn’t resign because he wanted to, or because he thought it was the right thing to do.

He resigned because doing so was part of his plea agreement.

I have no doubt at all that if that hadn’t been the case, he would not have resigned.

I also have no doubt at all that he would have been supported in that by most of the elected officials of Patterson, as well as by many Democrat elected officials at the state and national level.

I further have no doubt that he would have been elected again, if he had chosen to run. Which he would have.

I’m sure he would have been reelected if he had run his campaign from his prison cell.

Hey, shouldn’t Lou Costello’s statue in Patterson NJ come down as well?

He once played a confederate soldier.

(Actually, he unwittingly joined the Union army and had to use flour to disguise the uniform)

Identifying the mayor of Paterson, NJ as a Democrat is redundant.

A corrupt NJ mayor? Naw, can’t possibly be true? /sarc

However, some politicians and some parties get away with far worse, buying not short term personal financial gains, but long term power and it’s financial gains, by stealing from many taxpayers in the process of buying the votes that keep them in power.
