Poll: Most in NJ want Menendez to resign if found guilty

He’ll be tried, most likely be convicted, and will appeal. He won’t resign until Christie is out of office and a Democrat is governor.

That's exactly how it will happen, taking a page out of the Jim McGreevey playbook. When McGreevy was forced to step down as Governor of New Jersey, he submitted his resignation, but with the stipulation that it would not be effective until 90 days from that date. The reason it was done that way was to avoid a mandatory special election for the governorship, which the Democrats felt they would lose. By pushing the date out 90 days, McGreevey's resignation fell outside the time frame for which a special election would be required. It then enabled the Dems install Ricahrd Cody as the acting governor until the next election, which was won by Democrat Jon Corzine.
