The Mayor

Brandon Micheal Hall is breakout terrific as an aspiring hip-hop artist with firecracker wit who runs for mayor of his California town as a promotional stunt. When his real-talk takedown of the status quo makes a mark, guess what happens! Sprightly storytelling and a great supporting cast (including Community's Yvette Nicole Brown and Glee's

PASS on anything with aspiring hip-hop artist as the main character.

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World

The fall's best superhero show has no tights or world-shattering fights. Creators Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (Reaper) brilliantly assimilate a broad swath of influences — religion, mythology, comic books — to craft a new-age Touched by an Angel that interrogates what being "super" means in a culture of badly broken mad men with much to redeem. As a prodigal made magical by a radioactive meteor, Jason Ritter soars in a showcase long overdue. (Oct. 3, 10 p.m. on ABC) More...

PASS when any mainstream TV network offers up anything where they give us their left wing views of religion.

Young Sheldon

Sitcom czar Chuck Lorre breaks form to winsome effect on this single-cam prequel to The Big Bang Theory focusing on the wonder years of Jim Parsons' genius man-child. Iain Armitage owns egghead Sheldon, Zoe Perry is lovely as Sheldon's mom, and Parsons' narration is a perfectly measured sweetener. What moves you most is the portrait of a family trying to connect and love each other better. (Sept. 25, 8:30 p.m. on CBS) More...

ON HOLD as the first episode was not too bad but will hold judgement until I see more--

The Deuce

The Wire's David Simon and George Pelacanos return with an absorbing tragicomedy creation story about porn that shatters all of its illusions. James Franco as twins sucked into skin-trade exploitation and Maggie Gyllenhaal as a prostitute--turned--XXX auteur headline a sprawling saga that turns the '70s scuzzland of Times Square into a vibrant underworld. Truly mature entertainment about the human cost of "adult entertainment" worth your peeping. (Sept. 10, 9 p.m. on HBO) More...

WATCHING this as a guilty pleasure with very good production effects of the 1970s and mainly because of the actual excellent dramatic acting from a surprising source: James Franco. Also never though Maggie Gyllenhaal was attractive at all but she makes an excellent hooker. The sleaze of the early porn era comes out in full force that is strangely compelling.

The Orville

Seth MacFarlane boldly goes where he's never gone before: sincerity. His latest meta-pop chuckler isn't an irreverent Star Trek spoof but a slick, affectionate homage spiked with light irony and occasional lewdness. Playing a fallen starship captain given a last-chance command, MacFarlane is an appealing leading man. His vision is retro optimism with slightly warped drive. (Sept. 10, 8 p.m. on Fox) More...

WATCHING WITH ENJOYMENT as Seth take on "Star Trek" is much better than the Politically Correct crap version of "Star Trek: Discovery" that CBS is shoveling out in a pay-to-view streaming to an empty hole.

Ten Days in the Valley

A gripping mystery on ABC about a cop-show writer (Kyra Sedgwick) searching for her abducted daughter. (Oct. 1, 10 p.m. on ABC)

NOT SEEN YET while not a huge fan of Kyra, will give her watch when it premieres.

Me, Myself & I

Jack Dylan Grazer, Bobby Moynihan, and John Larroquette shine as the same lovelorn nerd on CBS' time-flitting charmer. (Sept. 25, 9:30 p.m. on CBS)

ALMOST NEAR PASSING while it has a passable plot, offering up very much shorter Bobby Moynihan and a young version of very tall John Larroquette does not work.

The Gifted

Fox brings the X-Men to TV on an action-packed family drama tailored to our fraught resistance moment. (Oct. 2, 9 p.m. on Fox)

NOT SEEN YET while not a huge fan of X-Men type TV, will give it a watch when it premieres.

Last night I watched John Wayne circa 1969. Did I miss something better than that?

I rarely watch any show until it’s in reruns. There just isn’t much out there.

After 20 years a few months ago, I finally watched THE SEARCHERS. One of the few westerns to ever make the Preservation list. Amazing story.

The Good Doctor has potential.

The Brave, not so much.

The Orville — Seth trying to be funny does not work. As a drama, it might have better potential.

ST:Discovery — just didn’t capture my attention.

Re: Last night I watched John Wayne circa 1969. Did I miss something better than that?

Let's see just what... you could be talking about:

1968 The Green Berets John Wayne as Col. Mike Kirby -- Warner Brothers With David Janssen, Jim Hutton, Aldo Ray, Bruce Cabot, Patrick Wayne, George Takei, Mike Henry, Richard 'Cactus' Pryor, Luke Askew, Jason Evers, and Edward Faulkner. Wayne's controversial take on the Vietnam War. Filmed in Panavision and Technicolor on location at Fort Benning, Georgia. Co-directed by an uncredited Mervyn LeRoy, but credit given instead to Ray Kellogg.

1968 Hellfighters John Yayne as Chance Buckman direcvted by Andrew V. McLaglen -- Univbersal With Katharine Ross, Vera Miles, Edmund Hagman, Albert Morin, John Alderson, Edward Coleman, Jim Hutton, Bruce Cabot, Jay C. Flippen, Edward Faulkner, Barbara Stuart, Valentin de Vargas, Richard 'Cactus' Pryor, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez (uncredited), and John Stephenson (uncredited). Wayne's character was based on real-life "hellfighter" Red Adair. Filmed in Panavision and Technicolor.

1969 True Grit John Wayne as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn directed by Henry Hathaway -- Paramount With Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Jeremy Slate, Dennis Hopper, Robert Duvall, Strother Martin, Jeff Corey, John Doucette, John Fielder, Jay Silverheels (uncredited), James McEachin (uncredited), and Hank Worden (uncredited). Wayne's Academy Award-winning performance and his last film with Hathaway. Filmed in Technicolor.

1969 The Undefeated John Wayne as Col. John Henry Thomas direcvted by Andrew V. McLaglen -- 20th Century Fox With Rock Hudson, Roman Gabriel, Robert Donner, Lee Meriwether, Bruce Cabot, Harry Carey, Jr., Gregg Palmer, Don Collier, Pedro Armendáriz, Jr., Dub Taylor, Edward Faulkner, James McEachin, Marian McCargo, Melissa Newman, Royal Dano, Richard Mulligan, and Jan-Michael Vincent. Not a piker... in the bunch!

Re: The Brave, not so much.

Have "The Brave" unwatched on DVR but do not hold much hope for it with Hollywood Liberal gay/not-gay Anne Heche, as Deputy Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency Patricia Campbell--

Gadzooks-- Anne hooked up with Ellen DeGeneres 1997 to 2000 and it appears Ellen turned her back to guys as she has married two fellas since.

The last one is the only one that appeals to me.

Right now watching Man in the High Castle, Gotham, The Honourable Woman (BBC) and The Night Of. Getting sick of some of the liberal BS in the Night Of, but the wife likes it....

I’ve so far only seen The Orville, and Seth needs to take his makeup down a notch. He’s got more on than the creatures from other planets.

I watched some of 10 Days in the Valley be filmed, guess I have to check it out. Wonderful mature little girl actress in it.

The 70s porn one SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE IN CHATSWORTH CA. Oh well.
