The Commerce Department slapped duties of nearly 220 percent on Canada’s Bombardier C Series aircraft Tuesday in a victory for Boeing that is likely to raise tensions between the United States and its allies Canada and Britain.
Commerce ruled that Montreal-based Bombardier used unfair government subsidies to sell jets at artificially low prices in the U.S.
“The U.S. values its relationships with Canada, but even our closest allies must play by the rules,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said.
Canada responded by saying it “strongly disagrees” with the U.S. move. “This is clearly aimed at eliminating Bombardier’s C Series aircraft from the U.S. market,” said Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s minister of foreign affairs.
Bombardier, meanwhile, called the decision “absurd .… U.S. trade laws were never intended to be used in this manner, and Boeing is seeking to use a skewed process to stifle competition.” …

Good for Boeing - good for America.
220% seems like a huge tariff. Unless Canada is supporting Bombardier so heavily that it produces and sells jets for 1/3 of their production cost, it doesn’t make economic sense. It’s effectively a ban.
Sounds like Boeing is trying to force Delta to buy larger planes. Bombardier makes small capacity planes and doesn’t directly compete with Boeing. Something fishy here. What we’re seeing is not what’s really going on.

If the airplane costs $10 million, the tariff is $22 million?
Canada bought a lot of airliners from Boeing, but no more. They were also going to buy Super Hornets from Boeing which was a huge boost to keep the line open and keep the factory in St Louis moving along, but no more. It will be much harder (and expensive) now for the US Navy to obtain additional Supers which they desperately need.
Good job Boeing, you just cut off your nose to spite your face and screwed the American taxpayer in the process. This company is one of the worst crony capitalist firms out there - firmly in bed with the GOPe Chamber of Commerce types in WDC.

It’s not as if EVERYTHING has to be made here. Just level the playing field, so American businesses can compete.
Protectionism is not crony capitalism. It is how the nations was founded and evolved from agrarian to industrialism. Try reading some US history.

You don’t get it. Their government is SUBSIDIZING their company for their jobs.
The Chinese government has killed so many jobs and industries in the USA by doing the same. Our government allowed our workers to be at an unfair advantage. The Chinese government targeted certain industries and actually paid 13% to those companies that exported to the USA. It has been reduced to 8% for many of them now since they have driven the American competition out of business. Americans cannot just start up again now that they’re out of business because there is a huge start up cost.
Many foreign governments have been manipulating things to their trade advantage. There are a lot of things going on behind the numbers but our politicians allowed it to happen. It was not FAIR TRADE.
Thank you President Trump for putting Americans first.
