Corey Stewart calls for ending NFL’s anti-trust exemption
The Washington Times ^ | September 26, 2017 | Seth McLaughlin

Virginia Senatorial candidate Corey Stewart wants to strip the National Football League of its lucrative anti-trust exemption over its response to players taking a knee during the National Anthem.

***

Granted by Congress, the limited anti-trust exemption gives the NFL broad power to negotiate massive television deals as a single entity on behalf of all the teams.

Mr. Stewart is hoping to unseat Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, in the midterm elections, but first must wrap up the GOP nomination.

***

“When these players take a knee during the National Anthem, they aren’t just disrespecting a flag or a song, they’re disrespecting every American patriot – and every American who has worn the uniform and died to keep us free,” he said.

That's exactly how I see it.

This guy is an 'effing idiot.

Whether or not the NFL should lose its limited anti-trust exemption should be a consideration that stands on its own, and isn't subject to political winds related to the current idiocy with the national anthem and these player protests.

Considered on its own merits, the NFL anti-trust exemption should be repealed. Now would be a good time. Never let a crisis go to waste.

I would tend to agree with you here, however if I may, the NFL has become a defacto “Political Organization” and they are organized. That Alone warrants the removal of their anti trust exemption.

Corey Stewart was among the first of local politicians to side with the citizens and the rule of law.

The NFL doesn’t like this nation.
They should no longer enjoy the perks.
I have always opposed taxpayers subsidizing billionaire owners and their millionaire players.

Not necessarily, With the NFL Commissioner Goodell coming out today defending the players free speech for these anti-American protests demonstrates how he is lying about this issue.

This is not a free speech issue as the government is not telling these players then cannot exorcise free speech. The NFL, as a private organization, can have their own rules and do. They’ve allowed these players to undermine their rules and then the Commissioner lies about it. You can’t convince me, the NFL with all their lawyers, don’t understand this.

If the NFL is complicit in politically advancing the Alinsky narrative, BLM, to help divide us by race, then yes, their anti-trust status should be looked at. With Goodell lying and the owners not even looking at firing him for this mess, after the massive backlash, tells me the NFL has gone full political leftist.

A case could be made it is to undermine our current President. The good thing is our President blew it all up by calling them out and now American Patriots of all colors have come to defend our national anthem and flag and for all they stand for.

I don’t think it will matter much. The League itself is non-profit, but the teams are private, profit-and-loss corporations.

I had a local IRS agent/friend who audits our local NFL team tell me confidentially the team never pays any taxes though.....

No offense, but this is just idiotic. The idea that political partisanship should have anything to do with the merits of a legal case is preposterous, and is typical of what you hear from the left in this country.

This is like saying that supermarket chains can engage in collusion to fix prices on the products they sell, as long as they fly American flags and give lip service to "unifying" the American people.

All athletic scholarships should be banned as well. Thanks T Ruth.

LOL, your kind of funny today. EVERYTHING involving billions of dollars, and I do mean EVERYTHING is intrinsically political and therefore subject to “the winds”.

Clearly, in my opinion, and including myself, tens of millions of Americans agree with T Ruth. Without taxpayers dollars there would be no NFL as we know it today. We have a right to bitch all day every day and non stop on Sunday!

That needs investigation & verification.
If true, NFL must therefore be persona non grata to SJWs.

About time. I’ve been suggesting that since the protests started. The owners allowed, then joined their employee’s protests. Seems fair that their anti-American disrespect result in ending their anti-trust exemption.

Maybe you missed my point. If the NFL shouldn't have an anti-trust exemption, then it shouldn't take Colin Kaepernick kneeling down on the job to make it so.

If your point is that a loud cacophony of protest from a bunch of people in America who don't know three things about the law should dictate legal decisions, then you are firmly on the side of @ssholes like Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and those two ugly mutts Obama nominated.

“Considered on its own merits, the NFL anti-trust exemption should be repealed. Now would be a good time. Never let a crisis go to waste.”

Yes, now is the perfect time. And while they are at it, pass legislation making it impossible for the NFL, or any other privately owned commercial sports enterprise from being able to get places to play financed by the taxpayers. Furthermore, there should be “rental schedules” with specific terms, designed to retire the bonded indebtedness that has already been incurred. No moving of teams and leaving local taxpayers with bills for stadiums and arenas. Only two ways out, pay it all off, or declare bankruptcy and be proscribed from restarting any franchise that does so.
