On a typical Sunday at Shark Tales Waterfront Restaurant on St. Pete Beach, bar patrons are hooting and hollering at television screens while watching NFL football. This Sunday, those same screens were playing Courage the Cowardly Dog and sports not involving pigskin or gridirons.
As various NFL players continue protesting racial injustice by taking a knee during the national anthem, Shark Tales owner Craig Munroe has decided to no longer show NFL games at his bar.
Munroe released a statement on the bars Facebook page last Monday. I will not show another NFL game at Shark Tales until these players stop insulting my country. I 100 percent believe in freedom of speech, but taking a knee during our countrys anthem is not speaking, its jumping on a bandwagon that shows no purpose and provides no results except to divide our country even more.
The original Facebook post has garnered attention with over 800 reactions. According to Munroe, new customers have been coming into the restaurant in support of its NFL boycotting stance.
This Sunday, instead of showing the big game, the restaurant hosted a concert event called Dont Take a Knee, Take a Stance Benefit. Eleven local bands volunteered to play, with southern rock country band Soul Circus Cowboys headlining.
Munroe has been a longtime Patriots fan, but not since their displays of protest.
Many patrons on Sunday voiced the fact that they were there in support of Munroes stance on the protest. Mumbles about crybaby millionaires could be heard throughout the bar.
Munroe says that the majority of the players taking a knee to raise awareness arent actively doing anything in the community to make a difference.
I dont agree with a bunch of football players who make millions of dollars getting personally offended because the president called them babies or whatever he called them and kneeling during our anthem, he said.
According to Munroe, 50 percent of the proceeds from the benefit were donated to urban youth in St. Petersburg.
I decided to put my money where my mouth is, Munroe said. If the players stop kneeling, Munroe will start showing the games again. Until then, he plans to host concert events every Sunday, where he will continue to donate a portion of the proceeds to charity.
He should show other sports or other foot ball games
I like that.
I'm gonna steal it........................
More like, “crybully millionaires...”
Good job by that bar owner. Hope patrons flock to his place.
Go buy a bunch of used Nintendo consoles and let your patrons play Tecmo Bowl.
suggestion to sports bars that don’t want to show NFL games, check to see if yo can get the tapes of your local high school football team playing football and show them on the big screen. also try and get some of the recordings of pro ball from the seventies and eighties before all of this chicken shit protest this stuff started.
“sports bars not involving pigskin or gridirons.”....
Happening all over the bar scene. Not good for the bar business but there is more than one way to protest. Guess the NFL hasn’t figured that out yet. read that “Bud Light” commercials may be pulled. Only way to win is stop supporting them.
If he hasn’t dropped NFL Ticket or whatever the cable/satellite package he was using, he hasn’t really hurt anybody.
Our local cable company. which also covers St Pete. has a channel devoted to high school sports. This is an easy one for him to do.
Heh. Bruins open up Thursday night, looks they have a young, fast team. They are up against the Patriots and the first Red Sox playoff game. I’ll be switching between the baseball game and the Bruins.
The First lady and I were going to the Frog Pond on Sunday, but now it’s lunch at Shark Tails.
Excellent start. Might I suggest the addition of no longer serving Budweiser products?
Sports bars are about as pleasant as rust chips on an eyeball so just about any change in format is a positive.
You may need a reservation...
What kind of person would stand with people soooooo stupid they think it's cops who are killing the thousand of black men being slaughtered in our inner cities?
Stupid enough NOT to see the obvious - that BLACK MEN ARE KILLING BLACK MEN IN INNER CITIES.
The chances of an unarmed black man being killed by a cop is LESS THAN THE CHANCE OF BEING HIT BY LIGHTING.
So, NFL owners have more in common with the killer in Las Vegas than they have with NFL fans... and they're stupid and vile beyond words for backing the lies being put out by BLM.
DO NOT STAND WITH THE NFL... STAND AGAINST THEM.
You’re preaching to the choir !!! Lol !
