Disney/ABC Television Group has begun laying off employees, part of a long-anticipated restructuring and reallocation of resources at the Walt Disney Companys non-sports broadcast and cable television arm.
A source tells Variety that the company began notifying affected employees Thursday morning. The volume of employees impacted is said to be significantly lower than the 10% workforce cut that had been speculated when news broke of the layoff plan six weeks ago.
Cuts are impacting all the groups entertainment units, including ABC Entertainment ABC Studios, Disney Channel, DisneyXD, Disney Junior, and Freeform but impact is expected to be minimal on production and programming. The majority of jobs being eliminated hail from non-content related or operational sectors.
The move is in part a cost-cutting measure, in part a reallocation of resources as the company shifts toward newer forms of content distribution and greater automation in some operational areas. The company is expected to be posting job opening for several new positions in the weeks ahead.
Disneys TV businesses, including the ABC broadcast network face the same headwinds as other linear-television companies, as viewers migrate toward digital and on-demand viewing and cable subscriber levels creep downward. The layoffs billed as a way to address the challenges presented by those trends. A spokesperson for Disney/ABC Television Group declined to comment. Deadline originally reported that layoffs had begun.
In 2013, Disney implemented more than 150 staff cuts in the film marketing, home video and consumer products arena in a similar effort to reallocate resources from traditional job functions that had become less vital in the digital era. In 2010, ABC News shed some 400 jobs as the division was forced to come to grips with declining ratings and revenue.
These most recent cuts come at a time when competitors are plowing money into TV content. Netflix earlier this month poached ABCs highest-profile producer, Shonda Rhimes, signing her to a multi-year deal, and ending her 15-year relationship with ABC Studios that yielded hits such as Greys Anatomy and Scandal.
But ABC has boasted recent investments in talent and content signing mega-producer Carlton Cuse to a four-year deal valued in its entirety in the low eight-figures, and recruiting singer Katy Perry to serve as a judge on American Idol for a fee of $25 million for one season.
The Culture War
I heard that Disney is absolutely 100% wall-to-wall F*ggots.
Oh my. Layoffs just in time for the holidays.
Pink Mafia in control.
Disney losing a lot with espn as people are cutting the cable cord.
Climate chage, LGBTQ, occultist and anti-family value programing geared towards adolescents and small children. Harry Potter runs 24/7 on weekend Freeform programing.
Wonder if part of this is due to the ESPN/NFL boycotting?
Disney owns ESPN and ABC. The Disney Gays, who control ESPN/Disney/ABC are probably the ones, who started their BLM thugs/slaves, aka National Felon League/NFL thugs kneeling during our anthem. They hate conservatives like you, your family and Tim Allen. Remember, Tims show getting cancelled because he was/is a conservative by ABC?
Dont wait for President Trump or congress to whack these Espn/NFL/Disney/ABC thugs. You can deliver a severe financial blow from your home and save money by doing it.
Disney owns ESPN!
What networks/? does Disney own?:
Disney/ABC Television Group. Disney/ABC Television Group operates Disneys broadcast television, cable television and radio businesses. ...
ESPN, Inc. ...
Walt Disney Parks & Resorts U.S., Inc. ...
Lucasfilm Ltd. ...
Marvel Entertainment, LLC.
If freepers are really serious about this issue, they can do two things this weekend or next week:
1. Cancel/cut your cable and go to a good internet to stream the tv shows they watch. Disney/ABC/ESPN and the above are owned by Disney. Each month they get a huge share of your monthly cable bill. Cut your cable, and they lose that monthly $* chunk/bite out of your bill. You will save a lot of money each month. *Estimated to be at a minimum of 9$s/month/user.
2. Use Sling Blue TV for streaming the channels you will watch. Sling Blue does not carry ESPN/Disney/ABC. So, the evil Disney/ESPN/NFL/ABC gay hate America liberals get nothing from you.
Cutting their economic tv take at your home is like using a laser guided smart bomb to cut off/destroy their financial tentacles/testicles.
Without their monthly financial take from your cable tv, the NFL/Disney/ABC will fade away like a bad dose of the GI Trots.
If you really want to smack/hurt ESPN/NFL/Disney/ABC just do #1 and #2 above this week.
You will save a lot of money each month besides feeling better.
Here’s hoping Disney is forced to sell off ESPN.
The Gay Mafia and social justice warriors at Disney/ABC would rather bankrupt the company rather than divest itself of its leftist, Godless, hedonistic ideologies.
thanks for the info. I have sling orange but will change to blue.
The more queer Disney gets, the less money in their coffers.
Can't happen soon enough.
After we learned that Sling Blue does not carry ESPN, Disney and ABC, went to their site canceled the orange and the extra for the ABC. We saved about $10/month!
Saving money and keeping these left wingers out our money loop. A great combination.
Twentieth Century Motors.
I remember decades ago when the Walt Disney Company was sold. My old dad said “Disney was the one studio they did not have. They had to get that studio. Mark my words, Walt Disney will be spinning in his grave after he sees what they have done to his movie studio.”
They need to conserve money in anticipation of the Weinstein lawsuits.
Thank you for the tip. I will be considering Sling when I cut the Comcast cord.
Sling Orange (20/mo) and Sling Blue ($25/mo) both do not carry Fox News Network. I suppose the “News Extra” (additional $5/mo) allows Fox News Network. $25/mo (Sling Orange with Fox News Network) gives a much better value than Comcast.
Does this service include a guide that lists the viewing times?
Die commie scum......he he he
