San Francisco Bishop: God Is 'Mocked in Our Very Streets,' The 'Vulgar and Blasphemous' Celebrated
CNS News ^ | 1/12/17 | Michael W. Chapman

In his sermon on Oct. 7, the archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, said the horrors of the last 100 years -- world wars, genocide, religious persecution, abortion, sexual immorality -- are in many ways "a living reflection of Hell" and a "mocking of God." He added that this mockery is even evident in the streets of San Francisco where gay "pride" parades occur and the "exaltation of the vulgar and blasphemous" occurs.

Archbishop Cordileone was appointed to his position as head of the Archdiocese of San Francisco by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. In addition to his duties there, the archbishop is chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Defense of Marriage.

Archbishop Cordileone made his remarks on Saturday as he, along with other clergy and thousands of lay people, consecrated the archdiocese to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus. This ceremony was in preparation for the church's worldwide celebration (on Oct. 13) of Mary's appearance in Fatima, Portugal in 1917, a supernatural event that the church says is worthy of belief and to which millions of Catholics are devoted.

Our Lady of Fatima, according to the church, spoke of the reality of Hell and warned of specific events in the 20th century, including the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, World War II, and the spread of communism. In commenting on those horrific events and other atrocities, Archbishop Cordileone said, "Who would dare to say that such barbarity is not a mocking of God?"

He then included abortion among those atrocities and mockeries, reported LifeSite News. "And then there is the attack on innocent human life," he said. "Our own land has been soiled by the blood of innocent children in what has become a deadly epidemic tantamount to a genocide of life in the womb."

In a refeence to euthanasia, he added, "and now we are witnessing the abandonment of our suffering brothers and sisters at the other end of life's journey."

Archbishop Cordileone then said homosexual "marriage" mocks God, and referenced gay pride parades as doing the same.

"Even in our own city of St. Francis," he said, we see "the celebration and even exaltation of the vulgar and the blasphemous, mocking God's beautiful plan in how He created us, in our very bodies, for communion with one another and Himself."

"God is roundly mocked in our very streets, and it is met with approval and applause in our community -- and yet we remain silent," said the archbishop.

These myriad evils over the last 100 years have so polluted society that today's world, "in so many ways," presents itself as "a living reflection of Hell, one that on so many fronts has roundly mocked God," said Archbishop Cordileone.

"If we think about what has transpired in these last 100 years, does it not tell us that the century through which we have just passed was nothing other than an experience of Hell," he said, as reported by LifeSite News

"The century since the Fatima apparitions [in 1917] has mocked God, but God will not be mocked," said the archbishop, "not because He delights in wreaking vengeance on us, but because turning our backs on God only bounces back to us, leading to our own self-destruction."

Now I wonder:

1) When he'll be reprimanded for being overly "rigid" by Pope Frankie?

2) How long it will be until his Cathedral is firebombed by Antifa?

This SF bishop has spoken out several times. I think Francis will reassign him to clean toilets in Iraq soon. Alas.

One of the most shocking developments is that the ImPopester is joining the mocking of God.

Yup. Mr. Bergoglio will shortly rebuke the good Bishop for standing up to the perversion that Pope Heretic endorses.

Believe me, many in S.F. are very worried that this good bishop will be cashiered. In 2015, several dozen prominent liberal ‘Catholics’ wrote an open letter to Pope Francis begging him to dump Cordileone. Fortunately, nothing came of it. Some believe it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when.’ Others believe he’s safe. He’s one of the Italian speakers among the American episcopacy, so that helps a bit. In any case, pray for him. It may be shocking to many on FR, but San Francisco is becoming one of America’s most orthodox dioceses and many good things are happening.

ironic that he is the archbishop of the Diocese of San Francisco... just to the south, Bishop McGraw openly supports communion for unrepentant homosexuals while denying the same to Protestants (even those receiving Catechism through RCIA in the Diocese if San Jose). Either the DSJ no longer considers homosexuality a sin, or considers a baptized Protestant converting to Catholicism less worthy of receiving the sacraments... odd position for the DSJ to take either way.

He’s got a very challenging job trying to advocate moral values in San Fransicko. A very very challenging job. More power to him!

Think about this: The Diocese of San Francisco has an exorcist. Imagine being the exorcist in San Francisco.

Think about this: as far as I know, the Cardinal Archbishop of Washington DC has NOT appointed an Exorcist.

You may be correct on that.

I must agree with +McGrath on this, someone who is in the process of conversion is most welcome to make a spiritual communion, however the Sacrament of Holy Communion must be reserved to those in full communion with the Church.

I believe the process of extracting a human being from the uterus is even a more wicked process. Hormones are given to the mother to induce labor. The intact baby is “born” and left to die in a bucket.

Imagine being the exorcist in San Francisco.

You'd certainly get a lot of exorcise.

Cordileone I believe is Italian for “Heart of the Lion”. An appropriate name for the Archbishop.

I actually agree as well except that I was taught in DSJ RCIA that receiving communion under mortal sin was itself a mortal sin... but Bishop McGraw does not demand homosexuals confess and repent, but only states the sacraments are not some purity test. I was simply pointing out the inconsistencies with long-held and CURRENTLY taught doctrine when it comes to unrepentant homosexuals receiving the sacraments.

Like you, I would want everything and everyone in this world to do all things right all the time. If anyone not in a State of Grace takes Holy Communion, scripture tells us that they eat and drink their own condemnation.

Does Pelosi hear this Bishop? Anything for politics, Nancy and nothing for Christianity! Bless this man.

No so much that I expect perfection... far from it. But, given reconciliation, I at least expect Bishops to encourage the faithful to be... uh... faithful. By stating that he is in no position to judge whether homosexuals receive communion, and stating that he will not deny communion to them (without even going so far as to encourage reconciliation and repentance prior to receiving communion), Bishop McGraw encourages EVERYONE to pick and choose which sins they think are old-fashioned without seeking spiritual guidance. No?
