Weve all read the stories, heard anecdotes, and seen it spewed over the mediathat Trump voters are all the same. They all have the same motivations, right? Not really. In fact, the Trump coalitions views on economics and government are quite diverse. You notice GOP consternation about Trump bashing congressional Republicans from time to timethats not by accident. Most voters view Trump as an independent rather than the head of a major party. In fact, new polling shows that Trump is actually more popular than the GOP leadership in some key counties for the 2018 midterms. Not really a shocker to some, I knowbut it undercuts the argument that Trump is a cancer to the party. So, who are these voters that back the president?
In June, the Cato Institutes Emily Ekins found 8,000 voters to participate in the Democracy Fund Voter Survey and found that there is no such thing as one type of Trump voter. In fact, a good chunk of the Trump base is made up of economic progressives. The breakdown on Trumps coalition is broken down into five groups: free marketers, staunch conservatives, American preservationists, anti-elites, free marketers, and the disengaged; 31 percent are staunch conservatives, 25 percent are free marketers, 20 percent are American preservationists, and 19 percent are anti-elites. Five percent are described as part of the Disengaged.....

I’m a free marketeer inside the USA between the 50 states. Outside the USA, not so much if not at all. Which category is that?
They’re missing the “I’d set myself on fire before voting for Hillary” voters.
I haven’t seen the “ClownHall” mockery posts on TownHall articles lately. So, is TownHall acceptable again? What about Thomas Sowell? Is he a smart economist again, or is he still considered an idiot here? Now i think i’ll read the article.
Where’s the “build the wall” Trump voter? Which category would I fit in?
I’m a mix of the first two.
Fool still doesn’t get it.
Theyre missing the Id set myself on fire before voting for Hillary voters.
Protectionists believe in free trade INSIDE the USA. The author is a dolt and makes any one that wants to stop all immigration for a long time as some kind of racist neanderthal.
Totally misses the mark. Garbage journalism.
I read the article. I am a member of the first four of the enumerated Trump-voters groups.
I’m a Limited Government Constitutionist. Which category is mine?
I’m a staunch conservative who’s tirelessly waiting for Hillary to be indicted and for William Clinton to be charged with rape.
Hard to keep up.
According to this idiot author that makes you:
American Preservationists have low levels of formal education and the lowest incomes of the Trump groupsand non-Trump voters as well
To be a patriot is to be an uneducated schlep.
Again this is garbage.
I am a “Staunch Conservative” / “Free Market” guy. So much so that I did NOT vote for Candidate Trump. I felt that he was going to be another RINO once he got to Washington. I have to admit, so far, I pleasantly surprised.
Ah, well, What can we expect from the lefty Townhall.
To characterize Trump’s historic victory as a protest vote against Hillary is really stupid. People vote FOR Trump. Shiltley was not even an after thought.
Free Marketer ... as long as that includes all freedoms (speech, press, religion)
Interesting read, but not necessarily that insightful. The Staunch Conservative and Free Marketer groups are closest to how I identify, but there are some generalities for those groups that I think are inaccurate. One thing missing from the discussion of any of the “groups” was a priority on Constitutional Judges. The BIGGEST factor for me in voting for Trump was that I believed that there was at least a slim possibility that he would appoint honorable constitutional judges while I knew an absolutely certainty of the egregious appointees we would get from hillary. So far, I have been pleasantly surprised with the outstanding job Trump has done in this area and hope that he continues to impress.
