The Spanish government has stripped Catalonia of its autonomy and taken charge of its government.
The measures early on Saturday came after the Catalan parliament voted to declare independence on Friday.
An official state bulletin dismissed Catalan leaders and handed control of Catalonia to Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria.
Earlier, Spain's interior ministry took charge of Catalonia's police after firing senior Catalan police officials........

Prayers for the people of Catalonia, and all people who yearn to be free.
Governments usually don't give up land and tax revenue without a lot of blood.
They don’t want freedom for the average person; they want a “leftist utopia” that imprisons all. 80 years ago this movement tried to exterminate the Catholic clergy from Catalonia; not nice people.
What I want to know is is this Catalonian “independence” being driven by a Muslim population? Muslims have been pissed off for several centuries for being driven out of Spain. If this is a true uprising of SPANISH people, fine with me, but if it’s a Muslim minority using it to regain a foothold in Spain, I’m not.
Maybe we’ll be surprised, but this looks like wishful thinking by a group of idealists who have no concept of the price of freedom. You only have to look to Croatia’s separation from Yugoslavia to see what can happen when the central government refuses to permit the breakaway.

The Catalans are a Celtic group, IIRC. Their language is closer to Occitan than Latin.
As to culture and religion, they are majority Catholic where they have not been secularized.
Catalonia will have the 3rd highest percentage of muzzies in the EU if they secede.

But will they have power in the new government? Or will they be not so politely told to leave. Now.
Guys? It doesn’t make news copy unless there’s some blood and mayhem. Two groups of white people playing musical governments is boring. Remember the showdown at the OK Coral? The Civil War (American and Spanish both)? Russia stomping on the Ukraine? Of course you do, because they didn’t do this non-violent stuff. If you want your revolution to be memorable, you have to get unfriendly.

Catalans are not that Celtic. Their language is derived from Latin, like Occitan. You may be thinking of Galicians, whose language is also Romance, similar to Portuguese.
No. They are a rich region and they are tired of sending more tax to Madrid than they get back. But they are also a liberal region that would govern themselves poorly.
I say let them go, the majority seems to want that.
Interesting. I went to school in the Pays d’Oc and I didn’t realize that conn3ction to Catalan.
I’ve read a couple articles indicating the muzzies are lockstep with ethnic Catalans pushing for independence.
I think Spain will snuff out this secession but that’s JMHO.
