Obama tried to give Zuckerberg a wake-up call over fake news on Facebook
San Jose Mercury-News ^ | November 1, 2017 | By Adam Entous |The Washington Post

Nine days after Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg dismissed as “crazy” the idea that fake news on his company’s social network played a key role in the U.S. election, President Barack Obama pulled the youthful tech billionaire aside and delivered what he hoped would be a wake-up call.

For months leading up to the vote, Obama and his top aides quietly agonized over how to respond to Russia’s brazen intervention on behalf of the Donald Trump campaign without making matters worse. Weeks after Trump’s surprise victory, some of Obama’s aides looked back with regret and wished they had done more.

Now huddled in a private room on the sidelines of a meeting of world leaders in Lima, Peru, two months before Trump’s inauguration, Obama made a personal appeal to Zuckerberg to take the threat of fake news and political disinformation seriously. Unless Facebook and the government did more to address the threat, Obama warned, it would only get worse in the next presidential race.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the problem posed by fake news. But he told Obama those messages weren’t widespread on Facebook and that there was no easy fix, according to people briefed on the exchange, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details of a private conversation.

In the electrified aftermath of the election, aides to Hillary Clinton and Obama pored over polling numbers and turnout data, looking for clues to explain what they saw as an unnatural turn of events.

One of the theories to emerge from their post-mortem was that Russian operatives who were directed by the Kremlin to support Trump may have taken advantage of Facebook and other social media platforms to direct their messages to American voters in key demographic areas in order to increase enthusiasm for Trump and suppress support for Clinton.

Twitter Buried #DNCLeak, #PodestaEmails Tweets In Last Two Months Of Campaign
Daily Caller ^ | November 1, 2017 | Peter Hasson

Twitter buried significant portions of tweets related to hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chair John Podesta in the last two months of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Twitter’s systems hid 48 percent of tweets using the #DNCLeak hashtag and 25 percent of tweets using #PodestaEmails, Twitter general counsel Sean Edgett said in his written testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

“Approximately one quarter (25%) of [#PodestaEmails tweets] received internal tags from our automation detection systems that hid them from searches,” Edgett said.

He added that “our systems detected and hid just under half (48%) of the Tweets relating to variants of another notable hashtag, #DNCLeak, which concerned the disclosure of leaked emails from the Democratic National Committee.”

Just two percent of the tweets using the #DNCLeak hashtag came from “potentially Russian-linked accounts,” according to Edgett. He explained that Twitter hid the tweets as “part of our general efforts at the time to fight automation and spam on our platform across all areas.”

For those who have always wondered what happened to CA, this is the answer.
After 30 years of media propaganda, people in CA really believe this stuff.
Dissenting Opinion is simply not allowed in TV, Press or websites.

Uh, “fake news” doesn’t come directly from Russia: it comes from the MSM.
Sorry, Democrats - but nice try.

No proof that the alleged intervention was significant in comparison to the vast oceans of money spent by the Democrats. What was truly brazen was the Obama regime’s intervention in Israel’s election and in the Ukraine.

The San Jose Mercury News is in a fierce competition with the San Francisco Chronicle to determine which rag is farther to the Left and can thus better serve the Democrat/Left Party.

Then again, given the demographics of the San Jose, California area, the rags may be able to form a compromise -- the Chronicle would be published in English (or what passes for "English" in San Francisco) and the Mercury News would be published in Spanish (at least the Mexican form of "Spanish") ... and both rags could play without conflict to their Leftist, often anti-American readership.

I have a theory too: that the left has gone fricking bonkers over make-believe Russian boogeymen to explain the fact that Hillary couldn't be bothered to campaign in Michigan and Wisconsin in the final weeks of the campaign. I leave you to weigh the evidence as to which theory is more likely to be correct.
