The post was founded as a base of operations against the Comanches and other Southern Plains tribes. Quannah Parker, the last Comanche chief, lived for many years at Ft. Sill. He was the son of Cynthia Parker, a Texas girl who was kidnapped and married a Comanche chief. She was the model for the character Debbie for whom John Wayne searches in the classic movie the Searchers. Incidentally, the real Cynthia was less than thrilled to be rescued later in life

In the interwar years it was at Ft. Sill that the field artillery developed the devastating fire control procedures and tactics that would lead the Germans to fear American field artillery above all others in WWII.

Daddy thought the .88 was their most hated enemy weapon.

One night they were all sleeping in a barn. An .88 went right through both sides of the roof without exploding. If it had, they all would have been killed or seriously wounded.

One of his buddies had an .88 land only two feet from him and it did not go off. They considered those things miracles because all the others did go off.

34Y in 1984.

Wandering around base one day I ran across the tombstone of Geronimo. Found it by accident, and it seems to have been moved since I stumbled across it all those years ago.

Howdy, lauren! Hope I managed to slip in before you have to head out for the night.

Took a quick run through the thread and it looks like quite a crowd of FReepers have spent time at Ft. Sill.

Yo radu!

I got most errands run. My shopping schedule has changed a bit since I started working.

It's gonna dip into the teens here tonight, Brrr, son's coming over tomorrow to eat, (of course), and hang out. Not much else happening.

Your day went OK?
