New Utah State study suggests climate change may already be pushing plants to their limits

If you have a garden, there’s a good chance it is filled with signs of climate change, though they might not always be what you would expect.

It seems obvious that as global temperatures increase, flowers might be inclined to bloom earlier. But Will Pearse, an assistant professor in Utah State University’s Department of Biology, had a hunch that the effects of a changing climate could be more profound.

So Pearse, who has a background in evolutionary ecology, used unconventional statistical techniques to show that flowering plants may indeed be struggling to adapt — not just blossoming earlier in some cases but becoming less consistent overall in when they bloom. Those findings were published Monday in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.

“Our work provides new insights into how human activities have altered today’s climate by contrasting the time a flower bloomed in the past to observation in the present-day,” Pearse said in a statement.

The USU scholar doesn’t typically study flowers. But for years he had heard his mother, an avid gardener, and other friends talk about how their tulips came up early one year, but not the next. The connection between early tulip blooms and warming temperatures might be obvious, but Pearse theorized that climate change could also be causing the late bloomers, as well.

The USU scholar stressed that more research is needed to verify those findings. He said he felt compelled to publish his results to “flag this so more people would look at it.”

Pearse said his next research project involves using analysis of plant data to develop a model for predicting when plants will bloom should the climate continue to warm — an important tool to help humans adapt to climate change, given that most people food starts out as a flower.

CO2 at the current higher levels has been shown to be, on average, a global fertilizer.

Well, they had me at “unconventional statistical techniques”.

Nothing I like better than a new euphemism for “lying”.

So now Global Warming is harming plants, eh?

We really should start a contest. Each of us chips in say $5, then submits a totally ridiculous global warming prediction.

Then we wait until some “scientist” says something that matches one of the predictions. The person who submitted that prediction wins the pot.

My entry: Global Warming will someday cause pencils to stop working.

Who else could put gloom into let a thousand flowers bloom?

The earth has been through much worse and didn’t go sterile.

One might get the idea that it had been thought out.

The ONLY science so much “scientists” do today is merely the science of statistics.

Yet traditional science KNOWS from long study processes seeking out empirical factual cause and effect, that correlation does not prove causation.

“unconventional statistical techniques”

As a statistics person, I have serious reservations about any approach that starts with that statement. Having read the study, my concerns were justified.

There has always been climate variations even before man made his presence know on earth by the grace of god, just ask the Dinosaurs.

We use to ice skate in the canals of the Holland in the early 1800’s and late 1700’s. Charles Dickens book on Scrooge depicted a very snowy and cold London.

Before that we a warming period in the middle ages where grapes grew England.

I am going to lay this out in simple terms for our misguided, uniformed, snowflake, progressive communist . . . The big culprit is non-other then the Sun, also know as Sol. He refuses to discuss climate change until you acknowledge his power and he doesn’t do good with lawyers, they always seem to burn up, but he has no problem hurling a few solar flares our way to remind us of the great power and its impact on our little green and blue paradise’s climate.

Final thought - without the Sun we would be a frozen ice ball, so yes there is climate change but don’t blame us humans we are a minor factor, go talk to Mr. Sol if you can get close enough.

LOL
