He shot at her phone at least three times. “With every shot, she was crying,” he said of the woman. “She was just staring at my mom while she tried to comfort her.” As he fired rounds into the woman, Farida Brown held her hand, telling her she was heading to heaven. At that moment, she heard a shot fired from a different man, at the front door. The other man was Stephen Willeford, who lives near the church.

Because in the 1960’s during JKF’s presidency, the community mental health system was born. The idea was that the people being held in the state hospitals had civil rights, that they were being held without having committed any crimes. The idea was that they should be moved back into the communities where they would be taken care of by mental health centers. A lot of government money was given to communities to train psychiatrists to treat the mentally ill where they lived. The effect was that a lot of mentally ill people ended up living on the streets not getting the care they needed.

This is also the first story I’ve seen that details the injuries caused by Willeford’s shots with leg and torso hits, followed by the perp taking himself out with the head shot.
