NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens has warned five million people will be left waiting for treatment if the Government does not increase health service funding in the Budget.
Mr Stevens said failure to increase funding would add one million people to the waiting list by 2021.
Speaking at the NHS Providers conference in Birmingham, Mr Stevens said: "NHS England's assessment of the funding position is that the Budget for next year falls well short of what is needed to look after patients and their families at their time of greatest need.
Mr Stevens said the NHS would not be able to deliver on mental health or cancer treatment targets, and that some elective treatments may have to be "retrenched or rationed".
"The NHS waiting list will grow to five million people by 2021. That is one million more people, equivalent to one in 10 of us, the highest number ever."

The wealthy still have their choice and get fast service because they can pay cash and fly outside of the UK. What a disaster but this is what they wanted.
Leftists in England and Canada are so “proud” of their national health services, even though they are statist, bureaucratic monsters who are offering average-poor care, and bankrupting the nation.
Britain’s NHS is the largest public employer in the world, after India’s national railway system.
You can't have unlimited coverage for unlimited people. It just doesn't work.
“The wealthy still have their choice and get fast service because they can pay cash and fly outside of the UK. What a disaster but this is what they wanted.”
A wealthy individual suffering from a sudden stroke, heart attack, aneurysm, or major car accident won’t benefit from a hospital in another nation no matter how much cash she/he has. In an emergency situation, NHS care may be the only thing available.
The first thing they need to do is look for ways to improve efficiency—I ended up working in healthcare after being in business, and I never cease to be appalled by the inefficiency and waste in our healthcare systems. They need to work from the bottom up, offering rewards for employee suggestions, and from the top down, getting rid of the bureaucracy. The ridiculous over-the-top privacy regulations also need to be re-worked. There are a lot of productive lessons to be learned from clinics conducted overseas in harsh environments as well.
Couldn’t agree more. My daughter is a nurse in an ER. She must have fifteen layers of bosses above her who are all shuffling paper.
This is the crappy mess liberals want here!
Just an FYI, the Emergency Rooms in NHS hospitals are usually empty. When Americans are visiting and need emergency care, they marvel at the speed at which they are served in UK Emergency Rooms. Let me clue people in......the Brits are stiff upper lip, dont ever admit health problems people. They would rather die than go to an emergency room. It is tantamount to admitting weakness. I am not kidding. And they are very reproductive of their Socialized Medicine. My niece-in-law recently put up a Facebook post about how she is humbled by the way the U.K. cares about ALL their citizens. She is happy to pay an extra 20% of her husbands income (she is a stay-at-home mom), knowing that ALL people will get care because of their sacrifice. The reality is that the vast majority of the people in Britain live in duplexes or row houses. Most cannot afford a single family dwelling as even the lowest tax bracket is 50%. (Or was when I lived there) And I read recently (here on an FR post) that the wait for a neurologist in Canada is 4 1/2 years. Healthy people in both countries tout the medical care in their systems, but healthy people just pay for everybody else and dont need to avail themselves of their health care system. The people in this country that want Socialized Medicine have NO IDEA what it is really like. Prayers that we all never have to find out.
Reproductive=proud. How DOES spellcheck come up with these bastardizations of easy words?????
“....if the Government does not increase health service funding in the Budget.”
That line should shake every single person who reads it to their core.
But it's free.
My family in Italy love their free healthcare. Although they dont recognize the huge costs they have paid for it. Half of them still have their adult children living at home, because they cant get jobs that pay enough to move out. All of them live in a small apartments, by US standards. My cousin was flabbergasted at the huge homes we have here, with yards and everything!
Their free healthcare has cost them a lot in economic opportunities.
Its very nearly impossible to know what choice and freedom in health-care would be like - nearly any examples of it have been eliminated from the face of the earth.
Here in the USA, we certainly don’t have anything resembling choice or a “free-market” in health care. Its a Frankenstein version - technically private providers and insurers, but highly regulated, controlled and in bed with the deep-state. Ever-increasing required costs are strip-mining the middle-class. Here in NY, its basically socialist - everyone must go to the NY/Obamacare marketplace. There is NO choice except for expensive plans from a list of approved crony-insurers. If you are “poor” you get funneled into medicaid and the government plantation.
technically private providers and insurers, but highly regulated, controlled and in bed with the deep-state
That describes all aspects of our economy. We have entered fascism.
