Senate GOP to add repeal of Obamacare insurance mandate into tax bill
Washington Post ^ | Nov. 14, 2017 | Mike DeBonis and Damian Paletta

Senate Republican leaders are adding a provision to their tax bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, a major change as they now try to accomplish two of their top domestic priorities in a single piece of legislation. “We’re optimistic that inserting the individual mandate repeal would be helpful” to the tax effort, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday after meeting with party members during a closed-door lunch.

President Trump and many GOP lawmakers have supported using the tax bill to repeal the mandate, a part of the health care law that creates penalties for some Americans who don’t buy health insurance. But up until Tuesday Republicans had resisted making the change, worried that injecting health care politics would imperil the tax bill.

Excellent.

It's about time for Republicans to get their act together.

Now all they have to do is pass it.

I agree. McConnell is trying to kill any legislation which will help make Trump look good.

Eliminating the penalty is helpful. It gives people an out.

But there are other features of the ironically-named ACA that are killing people. Most of these could be choked to death by open competition and allowance for bare-bones insurance policies.

Senate GOP to add repeal of Obamacare insurance mandate into tax bill

Great, allow nationwide competition and policy feature selection, pass it and watch Obamacare try to compete on the nearly free market.

Trump came back and demanded heads for Moore.

Who said he’s not a politician.

It isn't rocket science. When there is a critical mass of people who don't have Nazi Health Insurance, prices will come down. There will be incentives to develop low cost solutions and for people who are uninsured to do things to stay healthy. People will want cures instead of medicines that keep them dependent on pharmaceuticals forever. A lot of people who are getting body parts replaced will find ways to work with what they've got. etc

I wouldn't be suurpised if the cost of health care went down when companies actually had to come up with plans that people wanted. It'll be up to them to increase their healthy pool.

The Republicans in the Senate know that Obamacare will haunt them in the 2018 election if they do not do something. Now they can say they repealed it, but they really did not.

It was President Trump that basically killed Obama Care with an Executive Order. The Senate Republicans are simply covering their a*ses.

DO NOT TRUST MCCONNELL.

He must bust removed from office ASAP.

That would be a good start on unraveling the socialization of insurance.

This is what I was thinking they take out Moore in exchange for mandate repeal.

The Trump administration was effectively going to kill the individual mandate by issuing an executive order that let every U.S. taxpayer qualify for a “hardship” exemption from the individual mandate — as is perfectly legal under the ACA statute.

It’s a poison pill designed to scuttle the bill.

The gop faction of the uniparty is bound and determined to lose in 2018.

Politics is a scam and we’re suckers for playing

Repealing the HusseinCare tax should have been done in February.

The “tax reform” bills are both turds. They reform individual deductions, not individual tax rates.

Some logic!

It actually saves $300 billion off the deficit (making it easier to approve the budget with 51 votes) over 10 years - since we don’t force people to sign up (no mandate), 13 million won’t be forced to get insurance, therefore, the government won’t have to subsidize it and we save $300 billion.

The left will go crazy “but 13 million people won’t get insurance!!!”

Maybe they choose not to get insurance. Isn’t that their right too?
