While CO2 concentrations are now higher than they have been in at least 800,000 years, the gas still only accounts for a tiny 0.04% of our atmosphere.
However, extracting carbon dioxide from well mixed air is not just technically difficult, it's expensive as well.
A half-hour outside Zurich stands one of the frontline attempts to develop a commercial approach to sucking down CO2.
On the roof of a large recycling centre at Hinwil stand 18 metal fans, stacked on top of each, each about the size of a large domestic washing machine.
These fans suck in the surrounding air and chemically coated filters inside absorb the CO2. They become saturated in a few hours so, using the waste heat from the recycling facility, the filters are heated up to 100C and very pure carbon dioxide gas is then collected.
This installation, called a direct-air capture system, has been developed by a Swiss company called Climewanks.
It can capture about 900 tonnes of CO2 every year. It is then pumped to a large greenhouse a few hundred metres away, where it helps grow bigger vegetables.

What? It's free and Mother Nature does it very efficiently.
“Then it is pumped into a greenhouse to grow bigger vegetables”
They say that like it’s a BAD thing!
Wait?! Are they trying to make greenhouse plants fat? That can't be healthy. It seems racists for liberals to want to steel food from certain a certain race of plants and give it to a preferred race of plants. They are steeling from one group and giving to another. That doesn't seem fair? What did the greenhouse plants do to deserve the extra CO2. And what do they have against the natural plants that are going to starve?
Why can't liberals just leave the plants alone and let them all feast on their primary food source equally? I say give them all more food. I'm going to let my truck run all day in support of the plants.
More like ClimateWankers!
If not for President Trump, you and I would be paying for this boondoggle.
“It can capture about 900 tonnes of CO2 every year. It is then pumped to a large greenhouse a few hundred metres away, where it helps grow bigger vegetables.”
But, but, but Co2 is a POLLUTANT!
lol
“While CO2 concentrations are now higher than they have been in at least 800,000 years,”
This is a misleading argument. The CO2 results you get from ice cores are average concentrations spanning thousands of years. You cannot make a valid comparison between those and individual concentrations taken over a 50 year period.
Ok, so the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is too high and going to cause all sorts of bad things.
So we capture it from the air and pump it into a greenhouse where it RAISES the concentration of CO2 and makes plants grow bigger, faster, and stronger.
Wouldn’t it be far easier and cheaper to just let the plants enjoy the very slightly elevated CO2 concentration in the atmosphere in the first place without all the complexity and expense of the proposed process?
The irony of the proposed process is it would take LOTS of electricity made from fossil fuels to run their CO2 capture and concentration process. I think something called “The Second Law of Thermodynamics” is in play here.
How much heat does a heater running at 100 degrees C dump into the atmosphere?
Every time I read an article like this I am always amazed that humans always think they can improve on nature. I don't know if it's the writers or just how ridiculous things are nowadays. The best way to eliminate CO2 from the atmosphere is trees. Here is one of many articles on this subject.

Yep...That pesky ol’ The Second Law of Thermodynamics !
A warmer greener earth will soak up a lot the “excess” CO2.
“Free range plants” — heh, heh!
Humane growing conditions, not caged, no artificial hormones! What’s not to like?
This machine needs energy. That energy most come from somewhere.
Does anyone see how stupid this is? It’s using energy to provide a richer mix of Co2 for a select few plants. Duh.
The CO2 that you have “removed” formerly went to ALL the plants on Earth. You are concentrating it and giving it now to a very small number of plants. You are cutting back on the CO2 available to the the vast mass of plants on the surface of earth, and so fewer plants will grow and the CO2 will increase to the level where it was before you started your stupid machine.
Your damn Co2 is going to leak out of your damn greenhouse eventually, and go into the atmosphere anyway.
Big waste of energy for nothing.
What a$$holes.
lol - it is astonishing...THEY’RE CALLED TREES!!!!
These people forget the obvious and engage in mental gymnastics to come up with a way to do what nature does all by itself - right in front of them. You’d think the light-bulb would go off when they’re just grabbing CO2 and pumping it into an area to grow better vegetables. Newsflash - vegetation is everywhere!
Amazing.
There’s a machine that inhales CO2. It is called a tree. Make more trees.
