Really? Nat Geo? May as well site the New York Times or CNN.
Legal shooting: Good
Hmmmm...
Yes, that's why deer and elk thrive in the US.
By far the biggest driver towards the extinction of whales was the Soviet Union. Their ‘secret’ whaling fleets killed around 90% of the whales that were killed by man...as they kept building whaling fleets after they no longer had a need, apparently because they lost track of their secret program.
Yep - trying to stop the suicide pact where they do a Jonestown Kool-Aid party....and take the rest of us out with them.
Hunters appreciate nature more than most other people.
They don't stand a chance either when lured toward the sound of a feeder grinding out corn, same time every afternoon. I can however see hunting deer because many up in poor mountain communities harvest the meat.
Do these people eat elephant? Never heard of elephant steaks. They are killing for the purpose of the trophy, the ivory.
God gave dominion over the animals, fish of the sea, birds of the air....but dominion doesn't mean killing of his creation for our own profit/gain. Slaughter the animal and cut out it's tusk.
I dunno, just wreaks.
So an elephant isn't made of meat? The people eat that meat, but elephants over people right?
You know her!

Then your mind is closed and you are a fool....
But for those who are not close minded fools, let me just point out something... in the 80s, feel good do gooders got hunting or Rhinos under any circumstances banned in every nation, except south africa, which continued to allow legal, licensed hunting.
Today the Rhino numbers in every nation except south africa have plummetted.... Why? Simple...
In South Africa they are a resource with value.. everywhere else their is no incentive to preserve them...
In South Africa a Rhino hunt will bring in tens of thousands of dollars, the land owners, and state only allow the hunting of older Rhinos... The revenues gained by the sale of those permits fund the anti poaching efforts that help fight illegal hunting.
So a land owner/Rhino owner has an incentive to keep those animals alive and safe, and recognize their revenues for it when the rhino comes past its prime.. (the same is true with lion, and other big game legal hunts)
In South Africa Rhinos are a resource, and there is ample reason and thanks to legal hunting financial incentives to protect them... in every other part of the continent the only value they have is to illegal poachers, there is no financial incentive for anyone to keep them alive.. as a result they have been hunted to near extinction because there are no funds to stop the poaching and no incentive not to kill an animal for its horn.
You may not like Trophy Hunting, and you may not like hunting in general, but the reality is, effective management of wildlife requires effective management, and legal and licensed hunting is a very very effective strategy to maintain and protect wild populations.
I trust South Africa to do a damn sight better job of knowing how to maintain their nation and its resources than some bleeding heart in washington DC.
There, happy? Stop trying to convince me, ain't gonna change my mind.
You said, “I never heard of elephant steaks.” I showed you that this is demonstrably false.
No one is trying to “convince” you of anything. Merely pointing out where your facts are incorrect.
Elephants (and dolphins, whales, etc., so far - there may be more -) give evidence of being of a higher order than other NHP mammals.
This is something that we’ve only been able to understand sufficiently - and to study - relatively recently.
I understand the ‘conventional wisdom’ that controlled hunts may help to conserve; but I think we may find better ways, if we try. I don’t believe that we should be hunting down in cold blood animals that exhibit the kinds of sensibilities that these often do.
And it’s not just for the sake of the animals, but for our own, as well. It’s a matter of values: we tend to BECOME our values, and we raise ourselves as we elevate our values and live up to higher ones.
High sounding words, very pious. Too bad these animals aren't under our control. It would be interesting if these animals actually lived in the wild in your depressed and economically challenged neighborhood. I wonder if the control measures would be different and the concerns diminished.
I’m just suggesting that our understanding today may not be correct, and as we learn we’ll change how we think about and do a lot of things..
>>No one is trying to convince you of anything<<
Good grief, you’re like a bad date.
Look honey, it was just one night...I don’t love you. Please stop calling me.
Kill all elephants! The GOP deserves to die!
Wait, real elephants? Never mind...
