The ‘we’ in your statement suggests a homogeneous view of humanity not liable to occur acting in concert out of knowledge. Far more likely is the type of anthropomorphism directed by our ‘betters’ and a non-realistic Disneyfication of the type demonstrated on these elephant threads and ‘Cecil the Lion’ outbursts.

I’m thinking of the similarities among the convoluted *brains* of elephants, whales and humans; and behavioral evidence of intelligence in these animals as opposed to others.

I understood that. But from our knowledge of the animals you posit the view stated. The land animals will die from the realities of the human race long before then.

That was tried about 10 years ago and the effects of the legal ivory sale actually expanded the black market for ivory and led to more elephant poaching in Africa. While prices may drop, so will expenses to criminal/terrorist groups. At the same time, the customer base will likely increase as a once-stigmatized product becomes legally and socially acceptable. The numbers in Zimbabwe are still way to low but at least they appear to have stabilized since the introduction of the ivory ban in the United States.

It is interesting, but does not seem definitive.

There was no similar sale of rino horns, but rino poaching spiked the same as elephant poaching.

The Cites spokesman also noted that there had never been a one-off sale of rhino horn: “However, the spike in the number of rhinos poached for horn largely mirrors what has been seen with ivory. The illegal killing of rhino for its horn in South Africa alone increased from 13 in 2007 to close to 1,200 last year.”

I would like to see an informed criticism of the work. It seems to go directly against our knowledge of micro-economics.

Also, the Guardian is very left wing. Their economic reporting is slanted hard left.
