Look after them.
Don’t expect the VA to do it
You’re right, I didn’t catch that.
In 1999, vets had Hep C at ten times the rate of the civilian population.
Wonder what the Hep C rate was for Viet Namese hookers.

Never saw a mess hall after assignment to my line unit, just at the repo-depo. Just c-rats. Squad bought a duck from a farmer once, tasted like heaven. When pulled to guard a firebase in a rubber plantation did do some grenade fishin in a small lake. Fish was cooked real well. Also tasted great. Then back to c-rats. I always worried more about parasites in creek/river crossings as we pulled off the leeches wondering what was in there beside just them.
Going to the VFW tomorrow for Thanksgiving, I never went through Vietnam but I have seen plenty, I worked subs and my heart goes to the Argentine submariners.
I’ve been out with the Army. The Marines, The Zoom Club
Bottom line? VA sucks
They are angling for funding money
I’m among the youngest of Vietnam vets having flown the draw down and evacuation missions in 74-75.
That is a very broad brush. Some of the VA hospitals are awful, some are very good. I think it depends on region. The NW VA region tends to be very good.
I took my brother, a Vietnam Vet, to the VA hospital in Portland, OR last summer. He had high blood pressure and was short of breath. ER took him right in, spent three days in ICU. Turned out he had a mostly blocked coronary artery. They cleared it out, and I came and took him home. He said everyone was very nice. Only complaint was that nurses checked up on him so often he could hardly sleep.
Of course, my brother is more than 60% disabled, so he always get preferential treatment.
I had a very slow heart rate with shortness of breath last week. Went to my Dr. Tuesday, who sent me straight to the local ER. After much testing, they sent me by ambulance to the nearest cardiac center, in Eugene, OR. Got a pacemaker installed on Wednesday and came home on Thursday.
I retired from a major corporation, so I use their retiree healthcare plan. The insurance company will have to eat nearly all of the bill. My deductible ($4000 max out-of-pocket) was exceeded the very first day. I have so far seen charges on the hospital web site of more that $45,000. Expecting insurance to be billed another 15 or 20 thousand, of which I need pay nothing. Don't like the condition, but happy to sock it to an insurance company.
63 years old.
I was a freshman in high school
What about sushi?
The broad brush is NOW ALL OUR HEALTHCARE SUCKS.
And The truth is the VA never was a glistening example
I honestly thought the parasites in being written about would turn out to be VA bureaucrats.

70 - 75 isn’t old age.
90 - 100 is old age.

Knowing what is killing you is a bit like watching a bear eating you, starting with the feet.
I have no fear of eating sushi that is properly handled.
OMG! I ate sushi in Yakosuska better than 32 years ago, seems like a better risk than the current 7th Fleet!
WTF is going on with the 7th fleet?
Just turned 67 a few days ago. Oh, and I have not eaten raw or undercooked fish, ever!(especially in RVN)
“Wonder what the Hep C rate was for Viet Namese hookers”
It does vets a disservice to think Hep C is sexually transmitted.
Before I found out that I had it, my wife and I lived together for 13 years, during which time we had our first four children.
She didn’t get it.
I got it from contact with blood or dirty needle sticks from corpsmen. It’s not sexually transmitted unless you are so unhealthy that you have bleeding lesions on your genitals.
The government’s policy is to say that all the guys who have it are skirt-chasing drug shooters, got it as a result of their own misconduct, and therefore deserve nothing. Then they just sat back and waited for us to die.
I stand corrected. Thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving.
