Justin Trudeau apologizes to N.L. residential school survivors

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally apologized to former students of Newfoundland and Labrador residential schools on Friday, acknowledging his words alone are not enough to heal the wounds of the past.

Standing before an audience of hundreds in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador Friday morning, Trudeau said the apology was long overdue, and a stain on the relationship between the Indigenous people of Newfoundland and Labrador and those non-Indigenous individuals who claimed to be educating them.

"The treatment of Indigenous children in residential schools is a dark and shameful chapter in our country's history," he said in his address. "For all of you — we are sincerely sorry."

Between 1949 and 1979, thousands of Indigenous children were taken from their communities to attend five residential schools that were run by the International Grenfell Association (IGA) or Moravians. Many said they were sexually and physically abused, and suffered language and cultural losses....

Get out your hanky... Just Not Ready Justin Trudeau, brought up by nannies in a wealthy environment, and a former substitute primary school teacher himself before taking over as Prime Minister of Canada, is shedding his his crocodile tears.

I guess that the $50 thousand that every former student received, whether or not they were or weren't abused will be of some help, but let's face it... Righting the wrongs of the past with cash has become a political cliche of sorts on Canada. And nobody is better at it than Trudeau... He just handed out $30+ million to 3 dudes who spent a few months in a Syrian jail and $10+ million to a Jihadi who killed and American soldier... That makes handing out $50 million to one thousand former students seem like peanuts.

Is there a more loathsome mouthpiece of the left than the CBC?

"Many said they were sexually and physically abused, and suffered language and cultural losses...."

There is no excuse for sexual abuse, but I wonder if the lament about "cultural" losses would be recognized if the kids were Christians converted to secularism or atheism.

Has he apologized for burning down The White House?

Yeah, buddy.

Let’s send him the bill for that.

We’ll take British Columbia in trade.

We’ll rename it North Washington.

As a Canadian I sort of wrote off all these stories as more victimhood craziness; thinking well at least we didn't attempt to kill them all, like the Americans. It took the fresh look of my wife to teach me otherwise that indeed a great wrong was perpetrated on these children by the state.

Yes, you Canadians did try to kill all us Americans.

All your pyromaniac tendencies came out and you burned down our White House.

Did we ever try to burn down the seat of your government?

No.

We never burned down your hockey rink in Ottowa.

You never heard of the burning of York?

I’ll give you a hint.

York (present-day Toronto), the capital of the province of Upper Canada (present-day Ontario), during the War of 1812.

Just like you tricky Canadians to keep changing the names of every place.

Well, The White House is still The White House even if you Canadians burned it down to make s’mores.

FWIW, I will apologize for that event. Many Canadians are still Tories, also known as, Royalists, and it is likely PART of what causes animosity between Canadians and Americans. Especially considering a large portion of loyalists came to Canada after the revolution.

Also FWIW, my family came to Canada LONG after those events. Fathers side in the early 1900s from Italy and Belgium, mother's side probably around the same time from the British Isles.

I think it’s hilarious that the sanctimonious Canadians were doing in the 1970s the sort of crimes the US quit doing in the 1910s. They are so arrogant but nothing but hypocrites.
