CHICAGO — A Chicago bakery lost 800 workers to an immigration raid earlier this year.
Bloomberg reports that the Cloverhill Bakery on the Northwest Side, lost more than a third of its employees who didn’t have sufficient documentation.
The Swiss-based company makes hamburger buns for McDonald’s and other chains.
A spokesman said the bakery is struggling to replace staff, is facing pressure to raise wages, and has lost $21 million due to the disruption.

They were clearly turning a blind eye and knowingly employing illegals. Prosecute.

Part of that disruption will be due to interruption of production; part of it will likely be increased future wages.
This company is yet another example of how the cheap labor express shifts costs at public expense. Illegals can be paid less than citizens because they can count on in-kind benefits like food stamps or emergency care, and because they can more easily become anonymous (steal an SSN, get fake papers). The bakery pockets the difference.

Good, this is the kind of enforcement that will dry up jobs for illegal aliens and make employers of illegal aliens think twice about importing cheap labor.
Cut off the jobs and benefits and illegal aliens will go home on their own.

They can raise wages all they want but it still won’t bring the thugs to the employment line. Mexicans doing the jobs thugs won’t do. But they will get some good employees.
