We have something like that too. Kind of.

These are my favorite kinds of threads on FR.
Not holidays necessarily, but reminiscences of 'better old days' . . .

“What does this mean?”

“It means Luca Brazzi sleeps wit da fishes.”

“He can’t get a girl?”

Somewhere under water, a fish saw Luca wrapped in seaweed and said “What the hell’s this?” Another fish said “It’s a message. It means Uncle Blowfish sleeps with the Italians.”

The oldest daughter is getting the entire family sweaters for Christmas.

No. Really.

It’s just me and my dad so on Christmas eve we go to a friend’s family get together. Their daughter and I do a different theme every year for the dinner. One year it was a nacho bar, another it was Italian (lasagna, garlic bread, salad) and this year will be a breakfast bar with waffles, assorted toppings and side dishes. Then we do a white elephant game. After that is midnight Mass.
Christmas day my dad and I exchange gifts which are usually books and movies. We spend the day reading and watching until I get around to making the traditional dinner my mother had always made us: spinach dip and crackers, ham glazed with orange and honey, candied yams topped with marshmallows, green bean casserole, deviled eggs and for dessert mini cheesecakes topped with cherries. The cheesecakes were a dish my aunt brought every year until she passed. We like to honor our passed family members with food traditions! (Grandma gets honored at Thanksgiving with her banana pudding.)

Christmas Eve church service followed by hot chocolate. Christmas morning opening presents and having shrimp and grits for breakfast before Christmas Day service.

Nothing fancy. Just mashed potatoes with a pan gravy, roasted brussel sprouts and red cabbage.

As a kid we opened some gifts from family members xmas eve and then had Santa presents and the rest in the morning. Santas stuff was always unwrapped and laid out.

With my wife from Japan she didn’t grow up with xmas. Our first xmas married was the best. Once she was asleep I unloaded under the tree. She woke me up in tears, because she hadn’t gotten me anything.

She wasn’t happy with me when the bills showed up in Jan. When the kids came she didn’t want to do xmas eve. I got to do what I wanted for xmas much beyond what she wanted to spend, the compromise was no gifts xmas eve. Instead xmas eve we read Night before Xmas, muppets 12 days of xmas, and watch Peanuts Christmas with Linus’ quote from Luke about the real meaning of xmas.

Girls are in college now but still insist on doing the same.
