In Europes latest shift to the right, the expected next chancellor of Austria announced that his conservative party had cemented terms to form a government with the countrys anti-immigrant Freedom Party.
In announcing the deal, which comes exactly two months after the Alpine countrys parliamentary election, Sebastian Kurz said his center-right conservatives and the nationalists had agreed to govern on a platform of tax cuts, social welfare and an increasingly tough stance against illegal immigration.
Mr. Kurz, who is expected become the worlds youngest leader at 31 years old when the countrys president approves his coalition, said that Austrians voted for change in our land and that the two parties had agreed to govern together after negotiations in which (we) had different opinions and positions in many areas, but met as equals.
The Austrian election and the resulting coalition are among the many political aftershocks that have rung through the continent since hundreds of thousands of migrants came crashing through Europes gates two years ago.
