Washington Examiner ^ | Dec 20, 2017 | John Siciliano

President Trump ordered the U.S. military and the Interior Department to take immediate action to "break" the nation's dependence on Russian and Chinese supplies of critical minerals as a matter of national security.

"This dependency of the United States on foreign sources creates a strategic vulnerability for both its economy and military to adverse foreign government action, natural disaster, and other events that can disrupt supply of these key minerals," read an executive order signed by the president on Wednesday.

The 20th Century was the American century.
We dipped a little there in-between, but it looks like the 21st Century to be back on track to be another American century. MAGA!

You don’t suppose Russia and China spend money on US environmental groups who always lobby to close mines?

How? If they have the material and nobody else does, how do you break this without invading?

There are plenty of minerals in Afghanistan for the Chinese to exploit. Just send millions of Chinese to infiltrate the place. They’re not short of people. Moozlem women they can steal them. Russia will feel more secure about their Siberia territory.

“How? If they have the material and nobody else does, how do you break this without invading?”

minerals, not “materials”. The point is to exploit mines in the USA to produce minerals in the USA instead of importing them. It is essentially a (long overdue) middle finger to the Greenies and their minions in the deep state agencies EPA, USGS, NOAA...

"If they have the material and nobody else does, how do you break this without invading?"

Simply by developing the resources that exist in your own country.

So called "rare earth metals" that are used in magnets, and therefore everything, are produced mainly in China. Many suitable mining sites exist in the US, specifically in a shut down mine in California. These domestic sources can be exploited, all that is lacking is the political will to do so.
