I remember reading about the cosmonauts who got to visit NASA in Houston and how they were very impressed with what they were shown out in everyday America. They couldn’t believe how many nice houses there were among other things.

Fill your luggage with rice, quick round trip flight, sell it by the cupful near your airport hotel. Profit.

Once we had a super heavy snow storm and nothing was moving. In 2 days the store shelves were almost totally empty. In a few days, they were stocked again but I realized how close we are to starvation. It was very sobering.

Well I live 3 miles from a Sam’s Club, and they always have TONS OF MEAT, so I’m fine. I’ll just head over there when I need some.

LOL - that is basically the American attitude. I try to keep about 6 months worth of food ready - things that last a long time like canned food and rice. I also have multiple ways to collect and purify water...and lots of fuel stored for cooking (heating isn’t a big deal in Southeast Texas).

We could have sold our dinner tonight for $23,000 in Venezuela? I’m grateful to live in a country where meatloaf only costs a couple of bucks and not tens of thousands.

True, but here's the flip side.

Last winter, probably in January or February of 2017, we had a severe snowstorm where I live (in upstate New York). This whole region is used to heavy snow; we usually get at least one or two snowstorms each winter. When I say "snowstorm," I mean a storm that is strong enough to overwhelm the snow removal capability of local plowing equipment for at least a few hours.

The snow storm I'm talking about was a bit more severe than usual, because the state shut down the New York State Thruway, route 90, a major interstate highway. This doesn't happen very often because thousands of eighteen wheelers use that highway every day, and if they don't move they back up in all kinds of places and it's a real problem.

Anyway, I was snug at home, but getting low on food. The next morning was clear, and I went down to the supermarket in my little town (total population about 12000).

I didn't expect much to be there, because I figured they wouldn't have gotten any deliveries the night before, and I'd have to go a few miles further to Wegmans, which is their main competitor where I live.

When I got to the nearby supermarket, I was amazed. Shelves were fully stocked, everything normal, no panic buying, store personnel were busily stocking the shelves with the usual amounts of canned goods, fresh vegetables, fresh meat, etc. I walked around a few minutes, just staring in wonder.

When I got to the checkout, I said to the cashier "how come the store is full?" She looked at me, and said "What?"

I repeated my question: "with the storm last night, how were you able to stock the store this morning?"

She said "oh, the driver came late last night from Buffalo."

I was shocked. I said "but they closed down the Thruway," and she replied "yeah, he came on back roads." She seemed proud to say this.

That's the power of Capitalism. That's the power of competition, although I almost think that's a bit too much. That trucker could have gotten killed getting that cargo through the snow belt in the middle of a white-out snowstorm on back roads.

If you're not from around here, the Thruway is the main highway connecting all the upstate cities together. It's by far the best and fastest way to get a semi from Buffalo to where I live, near Syracuse.
