Facebook rolling back controversial initiative to fight fake news

Facebook announced last week that it is rolling back its controversial “Disputed Flags” measure next to articles deemed fake news amid studies showing it does not stop the spread of such content and only encourages users to click on it.

The tech giant said the move was in response to academic research showing that a strong image like a red flag next to an article “may actually entrench deeply held beliefs” and lead to an opposite effect of encouraging users to click on false stories, according to the company’s blog post posted on Dec. 20.

Instead, Facebook will now show “Related Articles” next to fake news, giving more context to users on any particular story.

“Our research has shown (Related Articles is) a more effective way to help people get to the facts,” the social media giant said, adding that “it leads to fewer shares than when the Disputed Flag is shown.”

The company is also launching another initiative aimed at understanding how people decide if the information is accurate based on the news sources they depend on for news.

Or maybe it's failing because of the inherent bias in the subjective judgements by Facebook as to what is fake news.

From the beginning of the Facebook entrepreneurial undertaking, wise parents warned their families that those who expected to get their news from Facebook were either lazy or ignorant of such an undertaking's dangers.

Many of us have been disappointed when normally intelligent offspring became consumers of garbage instead seekers for truth!

Also, much of what the left calls “fake news” are just posts which reject liberal assumptions.

How do you cancel a FaceBook account?

I really want to (intend) to “cancel, cancel” the FB account.

If Fakebook says it’s fake, it’s probably true.

“only encourages users to click on it”

Apparently people are smarter than Zuckbook thought.

Suckerberg reminds me of a 13-year old kid, who thinks he’s smarter than his parents and adults in general.

If they ban CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS posts they’d eliminate most all the fake news.

Zuckerberg is an atheist Jew.

There is something about such people that I have never trusted.

He of all people should appreciate how far G-d has brought his nation across the centuries, when everyone who tried to destroy them are ruins and dust.

Zuckerberg refuses to acknowledge this. And has instead set up an idol to himself made of silicon and disks, upon which is stamped the "wisdom" of his cult of personality.

In the end, it will come to nothing.

Whatever happened to "buyer beware"?

Read what you want and make up your own mind whether it's true of not.

Somehow we have acceded that judgment to the lame stream media and take what they tell us a fact.

How many times in the past have we been asked how do we know something's true? And the answer was, "I saw it on TV" or "I read it in the newspaper"? But that doesn't work anymore.

Facebook was going down the road of censorship based on some Lefty's decision what was true or fake. What could go wrong? :-)
