Skip to comments.UK's first street lamp to be powered by DOG WASTE deposited by walkers proves a success

The UK is now home to a dog waste-powered street lamp that creates electricity using canine deposits. After a vigorous walk in the Malvern Hills, walkers can deposit their dog's stool in the washing machine-like contraption which is attached to a lamp. It is then broken down by microorganisms to produce methane for the light and fertiliser for farmers.
Ten bags of poop in this anaerobic digestor can power the light for two hours, the creator claims, and could spell the end for plump little bags littering roadside verges. Brian Harper, who came up with the idea of the machine three years ago, has created the innovative light near Malvern Hills in Worcestershire with the help of funding from the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 'The gas light captures people's imagination and shows them dog poo has a value,' Mr Harper, from community environmental group Transition Malvern Hills, told the Guardian. 'As a result, we get it [poo] off the ground, into a receptacle, and producing something useful.'
Dog walkers have to deposit their bag of excrement in the small machine which is attached to the lamppost and then turn the handle. As it is heated and mixed in the anaerobic digestor the poo gives off biomethane which produces electricity to power the light.

To kick off my 2018 FR Postathon Contributions, ladies & gents, I present to you the dog poop powered street lamp! Here's to well lit streets and properly curbed dogs.
Happy New Year!
How long before they start putting the street lamps on top of outhouses.
Just dog poop? If it cann handle human poop, they might like it in San Francisco!
So, continuing this train of thought...
If I was to invent a lamp that ran on urine
I could put an eternal flame of shame
on Jane Fonda’s grave!
From that diagram I have a hard time believing this thing produces more energy than it uses to heat the poo.
This is not just going to be for the dogs....
San Francisco will use the human waste version.
Some days the light will burn brighter than others.
Officials in Frisco and Seattle are taking notes on the HUMAN Waste in the streets problems.
what happens to the baggies?
Nice work! It’s a good pick. The graphic clinches it.
Happy New Year!
Its a great kickoff post! And actually, a good idea. A lot of places already have doggie doo bag containers on the lampposts, so it shouldnt be too hard to keep the fuel coming. Yuck.
But I really appreciate people who pick up after their dogs. I was in Paris just a few days ago and I noticed that everywhere, even in the best parts of the central district, its still sidewalk hopscotch (as we used to call it in NY) to avoid the dog poop. Paris needs to be first in line for this invention!
Not a chance. The world will always be full of lazy, obtuse, inconsiderate people who can't even be bothered to bend over to pick up their dog's crap.
...and what powers the “poo-stirrer”?
this is a sh*tty post.
You mean now they are wasting their human waste?
Outhouses? How long before Denver and San Fagcicsco have setups for the homeless to poopower their street lights, of course they’ll never train them not to crap in the streets, they know it that’s why they made it legal for the homeless to just let it go, let it go, let it go!
Just wait till a Muzzie drops a bomb in it.
And no I don’t mean figuratively.
I think the poo depositor has to crank a handle.
Not sure why is this being proposed in the UK when muslims hate dogs, therefore dogs will be banned there...eventually.
