Trump's ICE chief call to arrest mayors of 'sanctuary cities' seen as 'outrageous threat'
The Dallas Morning News ^ | January 3rd, 2018 | Todd J. Gillman James Barragán

WASHINGTON - The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement wants the Justice Department to prosecute mayors and other political leaders in so-called "sanctuary cities" that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

"We need to hold these politicians accountable for their actions," Thomas Homan told Fox News. "This isn't the America I grew up in. We got to take these sanctuary cities on. We got to take them to court. And we got to start charging some of these politicians with crimes."

Such a policy would dramatically raise the stakes for immigrant-friendly cities and states that have clashed with the administration. The ACLU said Wednesday that Homan's "outrageous threat" should disqualify him from leadership of the agency that enforces immigration law.

Homan insisted that President Donald Trump shares his view.

A number of Texas cities, including Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin -- all led by Democrats -- have resisted Trump's hardline approach to immigration, prompting a state law aimed at pressuring local jurisdictions.

Leaders in those cities would presumably be targeted under Homan's approach. Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told the Houston Chronicle that the federal threat smacked of an incursion against "states' rights and local rights."

Which is the bastards’ first signal that they’ll try their communist damnedest to stop it with all the black-robed judicial traitors they can round up.

I thought the “state’s rights” argument went away after George Wallace lost the schoolhouse door fight.

Nope. 1865 put an end to States Rights.

Don’t threaten. Just arrest

I think its good to point out that they are in violation first. Then, if they still don't comply, there is no doubt that they knowingly and willfully violated the law, and cant plead ignorance for leniency. They either come to their senses or they get the full court press. Some will come to their senses, realizing the cost of fighting this in court. Gets the same thing accomplished but at lower cost for courts.

I thought Dallas papers were conservative?

Definitely not the Dallas Morning News and I don't think any others are either. Dallas is a liberal arm pit.

I think the administration is ramping up to arrest. This gets the thing out there and discussed. The clarity of the issue is acknowledged by as many as aren’t crazy. Proceed to arrest...

“but they could just as well charge obstruction of justice or impeding a federal official”

https://www.justice.gov/usam/criminal-resource-manual-923-18-usc-371-conspiracy-defraud-us

Conspiracy to defraud the United States.

Open and shut.

Arrest every state legislator that voted yes, along with the Governor and State AG.

Order the state police and the leading police officer in every jurisdiction to comply. Arrest those that do not.

Prosecute all offenders.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told the Houston Chronicle that the federal threat smacked of an incursion against “states’ rights and local rights.”

Funny, I don’t recall Acevedo making this argument when Arizona and other states were being intimidated by Obama’s Justice Dept. from protecting themselves from the invasion of my country by people from other countries with names like Acevado.

Ignorance of the law is *NEVER* an excuse.

Ever say to the traffic cop, “I didn’t know the speed limit”?

How did that work our for you?

I think the mayor is typically the chief executive of a city, rather than one of its law-makers, although I know there are exceptions

Lots of exceptions to that rule.

Of the many cities I have looked into in California, the Mayor is always a voting member of the city council.

They’re big on “states’ rights” when they want to peddle drugs or harbor criminals.

So do I.

Imagine the Democrats get back into full power and pass a law that requires gun owners to turn in their guns, but Texas and all other Red-states declare they're "Sanctuary States" from this law. Would Democrats be happy about that?

This is funny, since Obama’s administration took Arizona to court (and won!) because Arizona was going to enforce the immigration laws that the Obama Administration chose not to, and was doing so by passing state laws which mirrored the Federal Law.

But, here, it’s dictatorial government threatening upstanding, principled state officials who ignore black letter Federal Law.

I’m glad I’m just a retired civics/historical gadfly, not a lawyer. I couldn’t take it.

Before the invasion Dallas was conservative.

Is there a large conservative city in the USA?
