Breaking: Russia savages emergency UN meeting on Iran as 'harmful and destructive'

The UN Security Council is holding a meeting on Friday to discuss the Iran protests. The US called for the extraordinary council sitting...

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov is reported to have said: “Iran's domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council's role.”

He added that the possibility of new US sanctions on Iran were “illegitimate”.

Nikki Haley, the US Representative at the UN, proposed the emergency meeting of the Security Council earlier this week.

Speaking on Tuesday she said: “Nowhere is the urgency of peace, security, and freedom being more tested than in Iran.

“It takes great bravery for the Iranian people to use the power of their voice against their government, especially when their own Government has a long history of murdering its own people who dare to speak the truth.”

She added “the international community has a role to play” in the conflict and that “the UN must speak out”.

More than 1,000 people have been arrested and at least 21 people have been killed during the Riot police have used extreme measures such as water cannon and tear gas to try and disperse crowds.

President Trump criticised Iran’s actions on Twitter earlier this week.

On Twitter, he said: “Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption and its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad.

“Iranian government should respect their people’s rights, including the right to express themselves. The world is watching.”

Protests across Iran broke out on December 28 as furious citizens called on President Hassan Rouhani’s Government to focus less on issues abroad and more on domestic problems.

Chants of "not Gaza, not Lebanon, my life for Iran" and "leave Syria, think about us" have broken out in cities across the country.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova fired off a statement dripping with sarcasm and aimed directly at Haley.

“There is no doubt that the U.S. delegation has something to tell the world,” Zakharova wrote on Facebook. “For example, Nikki Haley can share America’s experience in breaking up protests, going into detail about how, say, the mass arrests and the stifling of the Occupy Wall Street movement happened or how Ferguson was quelled.

I tend to agree with Russia on this, what Iran does internally, what its citizens do or don’t do, is their business. It seems to me that it’s none of our business, just like it’s none of their business what we do inside our borders. Now, what Iran does outside it’s borders is an entirely different matter.

As she says?

“Iran's domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council's role.”

How dare the Russians make this savage statement, why every Progressive knows the UN Security Council should run the internal affairs of all nations.

They really don’t have a clue do they.

Those protests essentially ran their course without direct hands on police or national guard involvement.

Perhaps some, but not much at least that I heard of.

“Iran’s domestic affairs have nothing to do with the United Nations Security Council’s role.”

Yep, they only concern themselves with Israel’s domestic affairs, and America’s. Anyway, all the smart people know that Trump and Russia are in cahoots, so no worries here.

Darn, Maria Zakharova has managed to get a hold of a copy of the New York Times, or maybe the Washington Post, I wonder who let them get out?

These do devolve down into ridiculous discussions, don’t they. Better to stand off and let Iranians solve their own problems, protest or civil war, or whatever. If we don’t like how this occurs or the results, we can always stop doing business with them, isolate them, etc. Seriously, if they massacre their citizens, that’s about all we can do as we won’t go to war over it. Heck, we’ve refused to go to war over blatant genocide around the world, so why, beyond political theatrics, step into Iran’s internal affairs? Seems like it will only reinforce the government anyway. Should we give aid to protesters, they become foreign agents and, like we’d do, be discredited.

I think Trump sees a lot more at stake for us and our interests than we realize. Delicate balance indeed.

Russia has a compelling interest in Iran.

Look at a map.

It’s the only country between central Russia and the Indian ocean.
