Trump book author Michael Wolff made a damaging admission on the ‘Today’ show

Author Michael Wolff bolstered President Trump's effort to discredit the new book “Fire and Fury” on Friday when he acknowledged in a “Today” show interview that he had been willing to say whatever was “necessary” to gain access at the White House.

Wolff's admission does not directly undermine the veracity of his reporting, but it creates the appearance that he might have approached some members of the president's team under false pretenses, leading sources to believe that when they opened up they were speaking to a sympathetic ear. That's a bad look — one which the White House can use to impugn Wolff's integrity and, perhaps unfairly, cast doubt on whichever elements of his work the president doesn't like.

Here's Wolff's exchange with “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie:

GUTHRIE: Your former editor at Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter, said he wasn't surprised you'd written this explosive book; he was surprised they let you in the door at the White House. Are you surprised?

WOLFF: You know, um, no. I'm a nice guy. I go in . . .

GUTHRIE: Did you flatter your way in?

WOLFF: I certainly said what was ever necessary to get the story.

Doesn’t matter. The book will be a best-seller. Trump haters will believe everything in it just because of confirmation bias. Trump supporters won’t bother to read it or will try to point out the lies in it. In the end, I predict it being a huge money-maker for the author but not making any impact in the ever-forward Trump agenda. By election day we’ll have all forgotten about it.

I’m sure he has legal advice, and this statement alone does not incriminate him libel, as far as I can see.

But Wolff's acknowledgment that he “certainly said what was ever necessary to get the story” suggests some of his past coverage might have been dictated by strategy, rather than sincere belief, which opens the author to questions about the sincerity of his book, too.~~~~~~~~~~Liberals are never sincere...

It will probably have the same impact as Fahrenheit 911: none.

Before it is over, every penny that Wolff will receive from this book will go to pay lawyers fees.

"Whatever is necessary" means saying the talk is off the record, and then using it anyway.

If the MSM doesn't disavow this, they are all tainted by it. We already have ABC refusing to divulge the sources who burned Brian Ross; will they defend lying about off the record talks, too?

“I am a nice guy!” Not according to the people he defamed and misled. He is a uniquely vile and despicable person ACCORDING TO THOSE WHO KNOW HIM.

Just saw an e-book version of this book on one of the British torrent sites I belong to. Wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot poll, and it doesn’t look like too many other people are touching it either.

Tony Blair blasted the part of the book where he was included on BBC radio calling it a complete fabrication.

Wolff's admission does not directly undermine the veracity of his reporting,

Admitting he's a liar doesn't undermine his veracity? This statement is a good illustration of how uncritically the Washington Post evaluates the accuracy of their sources.
