What A Government Shutdown Looks Like For The Military

While it is hard to see through all the tax bill drama, our federal government is, once again, facing a potential government shutdown on Friday. While we all hope and expect that this disaster will be averted, it is important to understand what can happen when the government shuts down. It’s happened before, as recently as 2013, and there’s no reason to think it won’t happen again. And it can have a direct impact on military families.

Please note: very little is written in law. Much of this information comes from understanding what has happened in previous shutdowns and interpretations of the laws that impact the issue, but not from actual existing rules and laws themselves.

All I can say is this time the Commander-in-Chief is the one Donald J. Trump.

Past performance does not guarantee future results.

This is how it should work for all government workers. If it did then there would never be a shutdown.

That is how it works for Federal civilians. The same rules apply (worse in fact). During two of the previous shut downs, the military were guaranteed their pay, and civilians were not. During the Sequestration furloughs of 2013 (not the shutdown furloughs...two different events), many employees were not paid at all during those furlough days and never were given back pay for that. That included most of the Dept of Defense civilians, including doctors, nurses, engineers, etc.

I am not making this up. Google it for yourself.

Yep. One of the ladies I worked with in the COMSEC vault lost her house after that debacle.

Maybe I did not state it clearly. They may not be guaranteed pay during the shutdown but Congress always approves it. What they should do is pay them if they work during the shutdown but not if they don’t.
