White House Chief of Staff: Trump not expected to extend DACA deadline (Deportation not a priority)
Washington Post ^ | 02/06/2018 | By Erica Werner and Ed O'Keefe

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly said Tuesday that President Trump is not expected to extend a March 5 deadline for when legal protection and work permits begin to expire for young immigrants known as “dreamers” — raising the stakes for lawmakers struggling to reach a solution.

“I doubt very much” Trump would extend the program, Kelly told reporters during an impromptu interview at the U.S. Capitol.

He told reporters that he was “not so sure this president has the authority to extend it” because the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects roughly 690,000 undocumented immigrants was not based on law.

Kelly’s comments come as lawmakers are trying to craft a plan to grant permanent legal protections to dreamers and resolve other aspects of the immigration system. Kelly also said he would recommend against Trump accepting a short-term extension of the program legislative patch.

Trump said in a separate tweet that “We need a 21st century MERIT-BASED immigration system” and added that current family-based legal immigration programs and the diversity visa lottery “are outdated programs that hurt our economic and national security.”

At the Capitol, Kelly reiterated the administration’s position that dreamers “are not a priority for deportation” presuming they avoid breaking the law.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has said previously that her department would not target dreamers for deportation. But Nielsen said in an interview last month with CBS News that DHS will “enforce the law.”

Just one question. Declaring that DREAMers aren’t a priority for deportation feels a little bit like … executive amnesty, doesn’t it?

Now, if the White House chief of staff is publicly nudging DHS not to remove young illegals whose eligibility has lapsed, he’s more or less greenlighting the idea of letting them stay put inside the U.S. as official policy. They’ll be back in the, ahem, “shadows,” with their right to remain under a cloud, but they won’t be removed for the time being. Is that meaningfully different from amnesty?

Art of the deal. Read his tweet on this. He is going to stretch to the limits to hold out a reasonable sounding offer that the Democrats are going to reject. Mass hypocrisy being unveiled here.

If ICE agents come across “DACA Illegals”, they should deport them. Period

They aren’t priorities for deportation because ICE doesn’t just make random deportation sweeps just to pick up stray illegals here and there. Most of these DACA immigrants now have work or student visas, and as these expire the immigrants are going to have a big incentive to go back home.

They should be at the top of the list. It would help the President’s negotiating position too as the whinging escalates when the DACA illegals start being booted out of the country.

So stupid. He simply could have ended it has year. He didn't need to continues Obama's daca policies. Daca recipients have killed citizens under Obama and Trump's watch.

Deport them ALL. They are illegals. Seize their assets and deport them. No exceptions. If they return illegally, shoot them. That is my “dream”.

So DJT will end DACA but wont deport? The way I look at it is NO DACA but they will be deported later. Kelly sounds like a Deep State spy in the Trump circle.

The whole DACA thing is illegal. President Trump does not have the authority to extend something that is illegal.

They should deport them if the Democrats won’t accept the deal.

100% agreed. DJT should have not extended it. Then shut up and let ICE do their jobs quietly while the MSM write their sob stories.

Trump better not for several reasons.

One being he will look desperate to work a deal with the RATs.
He has already made a generous offer that many of us object to.
And the RATs turned down.

And they probably will. What Sec. Neilsen was saying is that ICE will not be proactive with deportations at the moment, but will deport with Law Enforcement contact.

Kelly is a Military guy, he understands the situation on the ground. ICE doesn’t have enough boots on the ground to start mass deportations. Now if a “dreamer” has law enforcement contact, then they can be held for ICE.
