“Maybe a parade but without tanks/weapons?”

WTH!!??

If the President puts on a military parade I want it led off by a Regiment of US Marines.
They are followed by loads of MOH recipients from WW2, Korea, Vietnam and the ME wars.

Follow them with a division of Iraq/Afghanistan vets. In their combat gear including rifles, pistols and grenades.

I want every branch of the service marching down Pennsylvania Avenue.
I want the ground shaking from thousands of soldiers, sailors, Marines and AF members marching in step.

I want tanks.
I want Abrams, Bradleys, Strykers, M113’s, LAV-25’s, Assault Amphibious Vehicles, Humvees and M1117 Armored Security Vehicles.
And I want them things bristling with every type of cannon, gun or rocket they normally carry.

I want artillery.
A lot of artillery.
I want everything from mortars to the biggest damned guns we have.
And I want rounds for those guns prominently displayed.

And I want a flyover.
I want every aircraft used by the US military to be seen by the people.
Everything from the smallest chopper to the biggest bomber.
I want the A-10, I want the BUF, hell I want it ALL.

I want liberal heads the world over blowing up real good.

If’n we’re gonna have a parade then lets have a PARADE!

If you served in the Navy, for instance, you would know that after boot camp very few sailors remember how to march. As the Chief of the Boat I was proud my crew could form up at quarters but I would never have attempted to have them march without weeks of refresher training. Sailors have better things to do with their free time - like liberty, spending time with their families, etc. and not working out on the grinder. Ships work still needs to be done.

I was a an officer in the military so maybe I have a modicum of credibility regarding this subject. IMO all of these excuses to not have the parade are total BS. This is UFB.

The military get paid whether on base/post or not. There wouldn’t be any extra charge for this.. that is a BS call...
(the transportation, on the other hand, may be part of the cost intended..)

Agreed. Dems just admitted that our forces are not funded properly and hopefully the President can is that against them during budget negotiations.

Wow - just give the Military and the Vet vote to the rats after that.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that you must have the mentality of a 3 year old to be a rat politician. Expecting the “Trump Is a Poopy-Pants Act” soon.

Another Democrat bill for the circular filing cabinet - like their bill to make "intimidating" journalist a federal crime.

I suppose that I know a little about the navy - and yes, really good chance that sailors with a job to do would not have a lot of recent familiarity with marching. (During my 27 year career, I served aboard Gators a lot and as a Captain, ran CINCLANTFLT's naval gunfire ranges and qualification system - and served as Division Officer for the sailors there)

Yet, if given the chance to carry the navy flag in front of the nation, what do you bet that they'd revive their long-dormant marching skills and make a great display for the country?

I've seen navy units march and while they would never be confused with Marines, they did great.

Can't believe that there's so much unseemly whining on the FreeRepublic. Do the parade!

"This military parade also needs country music, bbq, gospel singers, a float parade with hot rods and Harleys, fireworks..."

Uh, no. This isn't the circus coming to town. Next you'll want a gay pride float?

Like a scene out of Police Academy!
I would pay to see that.

You are right about Marines (and Army as well) doing a better job of marching - you are a much more disciplined lot. As a submariner, we are a relaxed group and cherish our off time after months of isolation in a narrow tube. As a group I’d say we wouldn’t cheerfully want to put in time to relearn the art of marching crisply. I had a hard time getting my crew to smartly and in unison take one step forward for Pete’s sake....sorta like McHale’s Navy! Hate to admit it but that was back in the 70’s and 80’s in better times and I don’t think things have improved over the years, if you know what I mean. I know that sounds like a sad indictment but it was one of the reasons I retired after exactly 20, giving up an E9 spot back at the E-Ring.

Having said that, this morning I read an informal Military Times poll found that a vast majority of the publication’s readers oppose the idea of a military parade in Washington, D.C.

Eighty-nine percent of Military Times readers responded by answering “No, it’s a waste of money and troops are too busy.”

The 89% of the Military Times sort of reflects the proportion of those I see on the FreeRepublic who also oppose the parade.

I see it very differently: for a certain amount of effort and expenditure, we have a chance to show America who we are face-to-face and connect with us. One of the great problems we have -which affects recruiting and readiness - is that the Left has turned our armed forces into a cartoon, a caricature instead of who we are.

This parade could reestablish that connection and maybe get some more young Americans to join us in protecting our country with us.

As I described in another thread, there was a military parade in Washington DC after the Gulf War and it was a hoot! There were massive crowds and they were eager to cheer for our young troops and marvel at the equipment that drove by and flew over.

Hell, if I can train sailors to shoot (I was the Ship's Self-Defense Training Officer for SURFLANT), no biggie to reteach them to march!

I should have added: “with his sword held high” to complete the image.

Funny you should mention teaching sailors to shoot. We were at a range one day for 45 certification. When ordered to fire all we saw was a cloud of dust!!!! Maybe we were McHale’s Navy!

Eventually we all finally found a target - not necessarily the one we aimed at - but that first shot was hilarious.

This was back in ‘74 so the facts are fuzzy but the image of that dust cloud gives me a laugh every time I go to the range these days and earns a beer or two from the guys afterward.

To the issue at hand though, I enjoy a military parade with the patriotic music - always brings a tear to my eyes - and before my NFL boycott I really enjoyed the few times when the Anthem played with military present and jets flying overhead. It’s a feeling, I’m afraid, half of Americans don’t appreciate. All it will take are a few protesters to lay down on the road to spoil the whole event.

You will enjoy this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo8NG7rrTeI
