Can Ukraine Win Its War on Corruption?
Foreign Affairs ^ | 2/15/2018 | Melinda Haring

“We are sliding back,” the Ukrainian journalist turned parliamentarian Serhiy Leshchenko warned a year ago about the arc of political reform in his country. At the time, his assessment sounded alarmist, but it rings true today. Since the 2014 Euromaidan revolution, reformers in and out of Ukraine’s government have tried to remake a fiscally troubled and deeply corrupt country into a Western-oriented, rules-based one, but have only partially succeeded.

Ukraine’s future as an independent and sovereign state will depend as much on winning its internal war on corruption and fixing its broken government as on keeping Russia contained in the east. If Kiev emerges as a reformist success story, its example will send shock waves through the post-Soviet space and signal that the Kremlin’s neoimperial and rule-breaking project of maintaining control over its former colonial satellites is not sustainable. If it fails, however, the EU-border state may collapse, creating a major security threat for Europe and beyond.

Last year saw mixed gains for Ukraine’s reformers. Parliament passed health, education, and pension reform, but those with vested interests in preserving the status quo, including President Petro Poroshenko’s party, known as Petro Poroshenko Bloc, tried to undo progress on anticorruption reform. In December, the Bloc-managed parliament attempted to sack Artem Sytnyk, director of the National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), and removed Maidan leader and parliamentarian Yegor Soboliev from chairing its anticorruption committee.

Ukraine’s Parliment has 400 deputies representing 18 regions. They are all but for a few Jewish apparatchiks (think Trotsky). Poroshenko himself is Jewish. Flame away to your hearts content, but until this corrupt cabal is broken Ukraina has no hope of a good future.

The Ukraine is no different than Russia. The only governance it has known is an oriental despotism. It has never known an enlightenment, and in its long and tragic history has but a single intellectual of note, and that a poet. Thus, it is more Asian than European, and so it shall remain.

While marginally less free, their nation was better off under the pre-2014 regime.

And they are still not free.

NATO/EU/US damaged that country. Then the Russians damaged it some more.

Ukraine has been an interventionist’s wet dream since 2014 that’s for sure.

Now the same globalist cabal is trying to install former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili as Ukraine’s next leader despite Poroshenko barring him from the country.

If it weren’t so sad and predictable, it would be funny.

As someone who is acquainted with both Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox members, including expats in US:

However “moral” a right Russia had in annexing Crimea - the spirit in which it was done was so vicious and dark: so that that move plus incursion into Donbass has turned a whole generation of Ukrainians against Russia. Including Ukrainians who were naturally inclined to Russia’s orbit over Europe’s.

Poroshenko is awful, but to many Ukrainians - the thought of eternal Soviet-time warp under Russia would be worse. So: its rough, but they’re in it for the long haul in terms of commitment to independence.

Poroshenko is BAD, but the burn even formerly pro-Russia Ukrainians have felt from Putin’s aggressive moves of 2014 till now far outweighs their frustrations with their own inadequate mess of a government.

Russia’s aggression has traumatized and pit family/church members of both sides against each other. And young Ukrainians especially want nothing to do with the permanent Soviet time warp Putin and Russia’s psyche is in.

Ukrainians are on the independence track for the long haul, but it is a long and bumpy road...

And now you have a growing number of Russians wanting to cast off the shackles of Putinism - but the system is as repressive as ever and in light of how on the bandwagon everyone was in the attempt to take over Ukraine, Abe Lincoln’s adage is very fitting:

“Those who would deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”

And Ukraine refuses to be Russia’s wet blanket, dragged into a rabbithole of neo-Stalinist oblivion.

For all the “Jewishness” of Ukraine’s elite, there is the Russian propaganda line that the country is overrun with Nazi fascists...and yet a closer look reveals that the pro-Russian rebels in Donbass are as neo-Nazi as Ukrainian nationalists if not worse...

Average Christian Ukrainians pray for an end to Poroshenko’s regime, but want nothing to do with Stalin-lite Putin.
