You are apparently missing my point. I’m not getting on them for responding. They are Miramar officers, not Coral Springs officers. They had a responsibility to notify the bosses they work for that they are responding.
Yeah. I got your point.
People were dying and the police in Miami are upset that their SWAT officers on scene, with the people they had been assigned to, did not call in to play "Mother May I".
Believe me. I get it.
It’s not about “Mother may I” it’s about accountability. I never said they shouldn’t have responded. They just needed to report that they were responding, to the people that are in charge of them.
Excellent points all. Todays cops want to look and sound like commandos but stop short of being the real thing when they’re needed most.
Remember Columbine? Meter maids with machine guns.
17 DEAD and they’re still trying to cover their a$$.
You are making false posts there is in Broward County 1 Sheriff its called BSO thats Broward Sheriffs Organization yes each city thats smart has there own Police Dept just like every state in the union. By Florida law each county has a Sheriffs office. When towns opt not to ave there own Police Dept they contract with the County sheriffs office for Police personnel and the BSO assigns usually assigns officers who were part of the local PD to that city...However Miramar is very different in that the mayor forced the Police Dept to downgrade several Capts down to Sgt so they would have quote,” Greater diversity “ unquote. To make matters worse the Chief of Police of North Miami Beach was hired as Dep Chief this is the same ex Chief that is the only Chief of Police to fail a state wide exam to certify there police force as a Police Dept...an there is lots more but not enough space here to list the craziness of a dept that used a rental building for 15 years claiming they were waiting for the Feds to pay for the Police Hq that had mounted a 30 foot antenna to the roof of a 3 floor building in the middle of a hurricane zone. Yep great thinking.....the list is monumental of the things that go on in a city that is 5-8 blocks North to South by 20 miles wide east to west......
My daughter goes to the local community school. One of her friends is a 30-something gal, army vet. The teacher was talking about lock-downs and hiding, etc. The vet whispered to my daughter “The heck with that - I’ll do what I was trained to do - ‘run to the sounds of the guns’. Of course without a gun myself I’ll have to get creative.”
It’s just crazy that a trained vet can’t carry in a school. I believe some schools allow it in Washington state - but not in the Seattle area.
Further more Miramar SWAT Teams carry there equipment vests, rifles, ammo in there assigned Police Cars which they take home every night and the car lives with them. The Police Dispatcher is County run its located in Plantation 20 miles away from Miramar. They were training in SWAT uniform in Coral Springs that borders right on Parkland same dept that showed up an went in to save the kids. Exactly how were the SWAT team members supposed to call in the radio net for Broward County was overloaded with calls as all Police Depts in the county are on the same frequency which is what it is because of the fact in this county towns begin and end in the middle of streets....In closing Gov Scott recently signed into law a law that gives Police the authority to operate outside there assigned patrol area. I hope these 2 guys hire a lawyer and sue the command staff for this which most likely came down from superior officers...In closing Coral Springs Parkland is the most northern city’s in Broward County and Miramar is the furthest south city in Broward County.....
Easy. Pick up your cell and call your boss on his or hers. You have to let someone know. I would not have suspended them, I would have given them a medal, but you must let someone one know that you are responding.
Actually, post Columbine training does not teach to set a perimeter. It teaches that first arriving go in and address the threat.
I know how it works. In Florida the sheriff is a constitutional office. They have jurisdiction over the county in which they are elected, both the incorporated municipalities and unincorporated county boundaries. Though for the most part the incorporated areas do have police departments and the sheriff generally does not operate (beyond their usual capacity) in that jurisdiction unless invited. But a person residing in a town or city can request service for the sheriff’s department should he not be happy with the police handling of an issue. Sheriff do some work county wide routinely such as serving of writs. Eviction notices for example.
Police personnel are not necessarily hired from the existing members of the sheriff’s department. Searches for chief can go nationwide. As for the internal goings on of the departments you mention I will have to take your word on that since I am not privy to those actions.
I think you are confusing me with another poster.
I guess I missed something in this thread. How do you know the Miramar officers DIDN'T contact their HQ's? Please point me to that fact, because I do agree with you about that simple protocol.
Still, it's been stated here that the SWAT trainees were in training and why did they leave such training to respond? As I said, uh, because the Miramar trainers had access to comms? How else would the SWAT guys know? Smoke signals?
Not one single brave first responder should ever be given punishment for flying towards saving children, orders or not. There are some things that over-ride policy and orders. They and the Coral Springs police should be given medals just for their attempts.
The "Broward Cowards" Deputies should be fired and live their lives in shame, along with their PC Sheriff. If the School Resource Deputy who hid and the 3 responding Deputies who hid behind their cars should eat their gun, I'd have no problem with it. How else does a real man reconcile that he didn't even try. Forget the BS from the butch Commander. They were on scene first - she was later.
I'd also like to see some on the School District with their BS "school to prison" crap eat something. Won't go further. And then you have the FBI.
I agree with all of your conclusions. Apparently the stated reason for suspension was not advising their command nor advising BCSO they were responding. I absolutely believe they did the right thing, but technically the reason for suspension if the accusations are true, is legitimate.
Thank you for the reasonable conversation, and sorry if I was a little pissy earlier. Still, I think that a suspension is harsh for the SWAT trainee efforts. Maybe a notation in their file. The BCSO can spin this all they want. I see 4 cowards hearing gunshots on children and hiding, according to all reports.
The VERY LEAST the 50 something School Resources Officer (what a misnomer) could have done is crawl towards the gunfire and lit off some rounds into the ground. If close enough, the monster may have heard and may be distracted from killing more. That retirement waiting fuck, just hid and did nothing. He knew what was going on.
I say no more rent-a-cops or retired or retiring cops to guard our schools. We need ex spec-ops to protect our schools. Don't know if they'd take a cut in pay from their clandestine private companies, not to mention the thrill of the suck. Still, I'd bet there are hundreds/thousands of ex-military willing to defend our schools for minimal pay or none, just to contribute more.
At 68, although in good shape and fairly healthy, I doubt I would be considered. But if the local recruiting started tomorrow for my local school, I'd be in line. I can hold a weapon and know how to shoot it. I would also not ignore a known problem person approaching a school with a duffel bag in hand. Sheesh, did that I screw up or what?
