NRA files lawsuit over Florida gun control law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — UPDATE (6:15 p.m.):

The National Rifle Association has filed a federal lawsuit over gun control legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed, saying it violates the Second Amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21.

The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon.

Lawyers for the NRA want a federal judge to block the new age restriction from taking effect.

The new legislation raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire. It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns.

The new measures come in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

Looks like they're suing over the age restriction only.

They’ll lose. You can’t buy alcohol until you’re 21.

And a higher age limit has been repeatedly upheld by the courts.

Hand guns are already at 21 years of age. If that is considered constitutional (it isn't) I don't see why this suit would prevail.

Wow - you’re a war vet with a tour of Afghanistan under your belt? Well thank you for your service.

But your military ID says you’re only 19. Clearly, you’re not mature enough for a gun.

Sorry. :)

Yup - oh and you also cannot buy tobacco products as well til you’re 21.

The new law extends the current purchase age limit to include rifles as well as guns.

If Florida has an anti age discrimination law on the books the NRA should win.

The difference is that there is no Constitutional right to buy alcohol. There is a Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

I hate the way the 2nd is constantly whittled away but I don’t want this SC to get another challenge we barely won the last one 5-4 and Kennedy was very wobbly.

Regardless, hope the NRA wins! Scott is done in Florida. Might as well withdraw from the Senate race. I’ll vote for Bill Nelson. At least I know what I’m getting!

The GOP is so worthless. If they can’t even support gun rights, what good are they?

Buying alcohol is not a right enshrined in the constitution.

However, I believe the states can regulate weapons sales to some degree.

So, if 18 is too young, irresponsible and inexperienced to purchase a weapon, surely it it too young to VOTE!

Governor Scott can’t let the despicable Bill Nelson get to his left flank in this year’s senate race

Scott’s move was tactically wise. I still don’t like it.

You're being a bit naive if you believe the NRA and its lawyers would sue if they didn't think they'd have a case for repeal.

Drinking alcohol isn't a Constitutional law as is the RKBA.

IIRC, the law requires 132 hours of training for staff carry on campus. Why is 20 hours of that training required to be “diversity training?” Does that increase firearms proficiency and safety knowledge?

Big difference here. You're right to bear arms is spelled out in the Constitution. Alcohol and for that matter pot consumption is not a right recognized by the Constitution. Hence the Feds or States can outright ban either. We still have counties in some states that are dry counties. No sale or possession of alcohol.

Valid point. However, I don't think the handgun law was ever challenged all the way up to the Supreme Court. I could be mistaken.

The law was so poorly written with many arbitrary exemptions .
All the carve outs make it flawed .

SHAME ON THOSE AR 15’S
FOR WHAT HAPPENED AT THE PARKSIDE SCHOOL

BLAME GUNS
NOT
PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT POLICIES FAILURES THEY
MUST BE HIDDEN

The inability to counter this perverted (they call progressive) agenda created by the democratic party ( in name only) has its goose stepping adherents in the media left make it up as guns and the NRA garbage through their swill mills. When it should be contested by GOP state and federal legislators who should be demanding investigative hearings exposing policy failures

DON’T MENTION THIS
Besides examining the conduct and arrangements of the Broward county sheriff’s dept performance failures. A dramatic reduction in disciplinary incidents at Parkside were reported after the selection of Obama’s Chicago friend as school superintendent occurred which was publicly acclaimed. And that school district was receiving large grant money from Obama’s Attorney General because of those results. That many critics claimed encouraged criminal activity. Which should require Trump Administration US Attorney General beside find out why when the FBI knew that Cruz should not be able to purchase weapons did. And review these grant programs instituted by the previous Obama administration.

Bottom line is it took a Constitutional Amendment to give the vote to 18 year old’s.

States have the right to determine who can vote otherwise.

This will be interesting.
