How to Complete the Escape From ObamaCare
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 15, 2018 | Phil Gramm

The tax-reform provision repealing the penalty on those who refuse to participate in ObamaCare has freed millions of Americans to escape a system that exploits them. But while Americans can escape ObamaCare, they still can’t buy insurance in the individual market independent of ObamaCare because private insurers are prohibited from selling it. If this prohibition can be removed through the granting of state waivers by the Department of Health and Human Services, or by the passage of a new federal statute, ObamaCare will collapse into a high-risk insurance pool for the seriously ill rather than become a stepping stone to socialized medicine.

The politics of the ObamaCare debate changed dramatically when the Congressional Budget Office determined that repealing the coverage mandate would save an astonishing $338 billion over 10 years. The saving would come from undisbursed subsidies, as lifting the tax penalty would induce an estimated 4.6 million people to flee from the exchanges. The number of Americans enrolled in ObamaCare plans is projected to plummet to 7.4 million by 2021, a mere 2.2% of the population.

The repeal of the tax penalty will progressively worsen ObamaCare’s risk pool as healthy enrollees who currently pay more into the system than the expected value of their coverage exit the exchanges. Premiums will rise at an accelerating rate for those who stay in the exchanges, forcing Democrats to find new funding or watch the program implode.

There are two ways to restore Americans’ freedom to buy health insurance independent of ObamaCare. First, HHS should grant waivers to states that want to let private insurers offer state-approved plans exempt from ObamaCare’s coverage mandates and rigged risk pool, enabling these states to expand health-care freedom inside their own borders.

When health insurance thru an employer began to have the employee portion of the premiums exceed federal withholding tax amounts in paychecks, government decided to get into the healthcare business. It is for keeps.

I am loathe to trust anything coming out of the mouth of Phil Gramm, but this seems to make sense.

Doctor offices and clinics should be allowed to offer medical care at a monthly subscription cost and have a list of prices for each procedure (exam, shots, etc.). And they should be allowed to advertise their prices. As it is now, I never know what my doctor will charge when he sees me, and they want to be paid before I leave the office.

I have a client that was AutoEnrolled for ACA in 2017 - using all the information they had from 2016.

Was supposed to make it easier for the enrollee (victim).

However, a lot changed in their family, including income (new job) and the fact that her husband paid for work health insurance all year.

Fast forward to today and she discovers she owes over $10,000 back to the IRS due to a subsidy that she did not ask for, never knew they had and cannot get any legal documents from ACA or the insurance company - because they never signed any. No updates were ever mailed to their home indicating they had insurance.

Whoever decided that the IRS was the best person to wash healthcare through is an idiot.

Looks like a snafu serious enough to call a local TV station.

Suggestion for Native Americans.... allow doctors to set up clinics on reservations. Let these doctors and their clinics practice medicine without fed government restrictions and without insurance interference, if that is what they desire. Free market medicine will flourish, costs will come down, innovation and access will increase. Anybody know any tribe leaders they can contact?

“Obamacare is a rotten tooth in the mouth of the US.”

No,no,no, it is FAR worse than a rotten tooth. A rotten tooth can be pulled and even if the hole is left empty it will heal up, if only Obamacare was no worse it would be great.

It has the added benefit of pitting the Democrats against one of their favored groups.
