Congress last week awarded the department a $2.6 billion boost when Mrs. DeVos had requested a $9 billion cut. She had sought to dismantle her agencys central budget office, a move she said would create a leaner structure, and to cut the number of field offices in the civil-rights division to four from 12. The spending package included specific measures preventing her from doing so.
Much of the additional funding for the department boosted initiatives undertaken by the Obama administration. None went to her signature request, a $1 billion program to expand school choice, though there was a slight increase in funds for public charter schools, which Mrs. DeVos also favors.
In the spending package, lawmakers forbade Mrs. DeVos from dismantling the budget office and increased the civil-rights divisions funding by $8.5 million, specifying that the additional money couldnt be used to reduce staff, such as through buyouts.

Republicans can't even cut funding to Planned Parenthood which remains fully funded.
Betsey,
What you can do is freeze all travel and TDY.
Maybe save the Planet by boosting the AC to 80 degrees in all offices.
Restricting travel to trains only.
Let’s get imaginative here.
Just because she got additional money doesn’t mean it has to be spent.
Ain’t America great?
“We’ll give you more money than you asked for, as long as it’s for OUR agenda.”
As far as saving the planet, many public school kids would be better served by picking up roadside trash out in the sunshine than getting indoctrinated in classrooms day after day. Work hardening!
Congress needs to visit the schools to see what the “extra” money has provided. This is an in your face attack on the taxpayers of this country . . .a great country founded with education of the best and brightest in one-room schools and outhouses. I don’t hear much about IQ tests anymore. . .perhaps we need to start with Congress!
Mrs. DeVos is a big loser in Omnibus bill.
The United States is a big loser in Omnibus bill.
It appears to be the end of the Trump agenda.
Because they think they can ignore us and still get reelected. And most of the time, they’re right.
It’s a shame we can’t vote for or against some other district’s representative. Trump’s agenda is being throttled by the Republican party. Is that what living in a banana republic is like? Kafka was an optimist.
So true. Only an insane republican would vote for Mitch! Totally a budget buster getting rich and laughing all the way to the bank. Being a republican means nothing these days.
>>>Remind me again - Why do we elect Republicans?<<<
Because today’s Democrats will go full blown Communism when given the chance by getting back into power.
I am under no illusion that POTUS Trump can get this Country back on track, so I can only hope he will be able to seat enough Conservative Constitution supporting Judges who will hold back the rising appeal of Socialism / Communism that has overtaken the Republic.
In fact, my number one reason for supporting him was the Generational impact on the Appeals Courts and the Supreme Court if the Hildebast had Won.
That is why I think that you support “your” favored Candidate in the Primary, but you Vote for the GOP Candidate in the General. Blue Dog Democrats are extinct.
If, indeed, as postulated by more than one person who should know, the “OMNIBUS spending bill” does not have the full force and effect as budgets passed in “Regular Order,” Mrs. DeVos can spend the Education Department’s money as she pleases.
I believe that a significant minority of republicans have compromising photos or videos of them that are used to blackmail them and their votes.
Post 12 has the answer. With Mr. Trump in we get more conservative judges. Conservative lifetime tenure conservative judges are number one in holding back the liberal socialist agenda. NOW pressure your GOP senators to move Trump’s judge nominees through the nominations as the Democrats are slow-walking the process. After 2018, getting these good judges in will be very difficult.
Note that the budget battle starts up again in September.
Military funding for 2018 and 2019 are off the table, they can’t be changed. All of the remaining Omnibus is to be fought again in September before the midterms. The President said he won’t sign the next one. In the meantime, funds not spent will be returned to the Treasury.
The takeaway is that the Executive does not control who and who can’t be fired, bought out, retired. Congress calls the shots for the ‘entrenched bureaucracy’. This is how they attempt to control the Executive Branch.
Trump has all the money he needs. There could be a government shutdown threat in September, a real one this time because the President doesn’t have to worry about military funding. The President is growing in popularity. Members of Congress up for reelection will flip their votes to the President’s agenda when they face voters this fall.
Pretty much exactly what the Framers designed.
She should challenge this over reach. Oversight does not mean you can run day-to-day operations.
bump
Omnimbus keep getting worse and worse, the more we find out.
