I am a bit embarrassed to say that years ago while I managed a store I was robbed at knife point. The man got 62 years in prison and by law had to serve a minimum of 53 years. The prosecuting attorney cautioned me before final sentencing that the guy wouldn't get much for a sentence and I was expecting him to get a year or two.
The prosecuting attorney wrote me a letter stating that the sentence was only due to my testimony and statement in front of the jury.
I had been trained to speak in front of large audiences and also had testified in front of Congress a few times so I had learned how to not only speak but to put together a cogent argument. I guess that worked.
The “freaked out” defense has been around since hippie days. Dude I just freaked out!
