U.S. blames Syria government for gas attack, mulls aggressive strike

WASHINGTON/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States on Friday blamed the Syrian government for a deadly chemical weapons attack this month and slammed Russia for failing to stop its ally, President Bashar al-Assad, as U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to weigh a forceful military response.

Trump is pressing for a more aggressive strike on Syria than U.S. military chiefs have recommended as he adopts a tougher stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. officials told Reuters.

One senior official said Trump has asked his military to consider options that would include punishing Russia and Iran, Syria’s main foreign backers, in part over the president’s growing level of exasperation with Putin.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has been urging caution in meetings, trying to avoid a strike that would trigger a broader conflict, two U.S. officials said.

While the prospect of U.S.-led military action that could lead to confrontation with Russia hung over the Middle East, the White House accused Syria of carrying out a toxic gas attack on April 7 that killed dozens of people in the town of Douma, near Damascus.

“We have a very high confidence that Syria was responsible and, once again, Russia’s failure to stop them and their continued (lack of action) on this front has been part of the problem,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

Looks like they have the goods on Assad.

While I don't think it's in the interests of the US to proceed, at least they waited until the evidence was in.

POTUS is supposed to be speaking to the press now.

Love Trump, but this is THE stupidest decision he has made.

I’m amazed.

Two big shocks:

1. The yuge budget

2. THIS

It isn’t our fight.

I’d like to say I don’t care but really I do because, for the most part, this is Muslims killing other Muslims. I hope Assad kills his thousands and that his enemies kill their tens of thousands.

Yes, I’m that jaded and apathetic.

President Trump, let them murder each other. It keeps us from having to kill them later.

Trump waited to conclusive evidence was in.

And it must be pretty bad as he is considering hitting not only Syria, but Iran and Russians in Syria.

I think that is just Trump “negotiating” and sending a message to Russia...but Trump doesn’t F around, Syria and likely Iran are getting hit hard...

I’m guessing cruise misilles and perhaps some long range strategic assets, after SAMs are reduced.

But hasn’t the US been in the middle of it for the last 6-7 years?

Really? Have you seen it? For that matter, has Trump seen “the goods”?

Trump has been played by the globalists, IMHO. The Islamist “rebels” shelled Damascus and Assad, in return, bombed the rebel area — WITH CONVENTIONAL ORDANANCE. Is there any proof or hard EVIDENCE that it was anything beyond that? What passes for “intelligence” today is some Deep State agendanistas saying “we think Assad gassed his people.

Trump has diminished himself in my eyes. Gullibility or being a sucker are not admirable traits.

I’m sorry but I have no faith in British “Intelligence” or Brennan’s Intelligence Jihadis .... just look at the photos and believe that you just run around and handle toxic nerve gas with no protective equipment other than a throw away face mask .... everyone would be dead!!!!!!!!!

Trump ran for office saying no more Middle East wars.

He’s done an about-face. Maybe Harry Truman was right: “If a man’s wife can’t trust him, how can the country?” THREE wives couldn’t trust Trump to stick to his vows.

Looks like they have the goods on Assad

This is the same U.S. intelligence that confirmed that Obama's great diplomacy got Assad to destroy the last of his remaining chemical weapons just a couple years ago.

So which is it?

Trump, who ran for office, promising no more Middle East wars, has treated that promise like his vows to his wives.
