All kinds of criminals might find it to be a very useful tool.

Can’t stop it.

Might pretend it does not exist. That will not make it go away.

Better to embrace it and learn to use it.

With the right leadership, the XB-37 can stay in orbit for a year crippling each an every Microsoft satellite.

With this kind of stuff it always reminds of that scene with Gene Hackman in “Enemy of the State”. He is a former US spy that just wants to be left alone and gets caught up in something.

The CIA is using real-time satellite imaging to try to identify him using all sorts of cool technology, tracking, etc. and it went something like:

Old CIA: “Come on, look up! Look up! Just once!!”
Young CIA: “Just change views to see his face!”
Old CIA: “It's a satellite miles in space! It doesn't work like that!”
Young CIA: “Well what good is it then anyway!?”

Obama already spent $100 billion to observe the earth.

“Can’t stop it.”

Sure you can. It’s massive spying. So just make it illegal. Don’t approve the satellites. End of problem. It is bad enough that government already has the capability. No one else should be allowed.

Great, Bill. Let’s dedicate a satellite just to watch your estate.

Speaking as a retired firefighter, this would be a fantastic tool for search and rescue as well as wildfire operations.

Many will be planting more trees and concealing swimming pools and decks. Most vehicles will be grey. Bizarre figures facing upward will be placed in yards.

Don’t worry, most of the users will be focused on backyard female sunbathers and nude beaches.

"It is bad enough that government already has the capability. No one else should be allowed."

There is another way to look at this....a capability open to the citizenry breaks the government monopoly on the technology.

To coin a phrase, if we don't do it, the Chinese probably will.

Note that I don't think this is "a good thing", but I don't see our leadership class having the good judgment NOT to implement it.

It cannot be stopped by a vote.

Several governments already have the capacity, and they are not going to give it up.

As I stated, the Russians and the U.S. have had the capacity for decades.

Who is more likely to abuse it, governments or private parties? I suggest governments are more likely to abuse it.

There is no “monopoly” on this technology. There are several competing players who already have the ability.

They are just not allowing the rest of us to use it.

Theoretically, you could install a world government and vote to stop it. But a world government would find such a capability very useful. The odds of eliminating an already existing capability are so close to zero as to look the same.

When I as a civilian can go on the web and watch your every move outdoors then I would say that is a bigger problem than the government doing it. One example would be for criminals to monitor your movements in order to determine when to rob your house or rape your wife. But there are many more ways in which this would be abused. It gives every citizen the ability to become big brother.

No one, not even governments, hasthat ability yet, at least not from satellites. Satellites have to orbit.

But nearly everyone has the ability to target a specific house with drones, which only cost about a thousand dollars.

The price is dropping fast.
