Sounds like a fun part-time gig you created for yourself. But I just can’t wash the transition from disc jockey for a strip club to poker out of my mind. :->
Yep. That is a real problem in ObamaLand and even parts of flyover country. When employers have the choice, young Americans are in the back of the bus with a handful of exceptions such as Chick-Fil-A.
From everything I have been told he occasionally would get a ride part way. That was usually only in bad weather though.
The man really, REALLY wanted to be valedictorian.
His route took him along US 460 which back then, 1947-48, didn’t carry much traffic.
It was also nothing but farmland between Lynchburg and Appomattox so there was no commuter traffic to speak of. If there had been it would have been going in the wrong direction for him. Nothing In Appomattox now and even less then.
I once asked him why he did it.
His answer was that he had promised his daddy he would go to college and work in an office instead of breaking his back at manual labor.
His oldest brother had been taken out of school in the 3rd grade to help support the family.
His other brother had gotten as far as 5th grade when their dad died and he quit school to support the family.
While he got a lot of support from his brothers and sisters no one in the family owned a car or had the extra money to pay for gas.
He used to joke that he wore out more shoes by the age of 21 than most people owned in half a lifetime.
