I had a subsistence diet consisting of dry Special K and an occasional can of Chef Boyardee Ravioli.

Didn’t kill me and taught me to pinch every penny I would earn in the future.

“...so they’re able to pay rent, buy those textbooks,” ....”

......and buy more beer on the weekends.

Don’t these folks remember what motivates college students? Drunkenness with members of the opposite sex is a college weekend tradition.

Drug test them, if they can afford drugs, they can afford their own food.

“For example, when I went away to college, I lived in a dorm, and was fed through a meal plan. It was paid for by mom and dad, who had saved for us kids to go to college. But other kids who had student loans, also paid for meal plans.”

When I went to college I worked the swing shift at a truck stop. Got a free meal while on shift. I received some supplemental income of $120/mo from a generous uncle. His name was Sam....

a bunch of pu**ies.

No one helped me when I was at university. If you are hungry? here’s a grand idea you pathetic losers:

PART TIME WORK!

My part time jobs were disc jockey for a strip club, bartender and driver for an escort service. Back then, i was like Uber. I learned more about accounting from my madam boss than my idiot professors who were not even CPA’s.

“Isn’t that about 60 miles one way. Lot of walking..”

67 miles from downtown to downtown.

He and my mom were the only two of ten children to graduate from high school.
He was the only one to go to college.

My grandfather never had a home of his own. He sharecropped and worked at whatever he could to support his family.
He made his youngest son promise that he would get an education and “wear a tie to work.”
His dad died before he graduated from high school.

My uncle did what was necessary to honor his dad’s wish.
If that meant walking 67 miles to Charlottesville that is what he did.
If it meant joining the army to save the money to finish school that is what he did.

He also walked from Lynchburg to Appomattox in high school, 22 miles twice a day.
He was on track to be class valedictorian and wanted that to help get into college.

It was a different time.

i graduated in 2009. You have to think outside the box. I was even a disc jockey for a strip club after constant nagging every week. Eventually, I ran the poker and blackjack tourneys (not legal) outside the university. No jobs? Create one. Eventually I became the driver for the strippers before Uber came about. And this with a part time scholarship in volleyball.

Lots of snowflakes, uber liberal idiots, and limb wristed pansies at UT Austin... but I repeat myself.

Unfortunately this is the case in a lot of college campuses nowadays. It is a combination of parents and schools producing these nitwits.

$15,000+ for in state and $54,000+ for out of state.
Not cheap.

I literally just...can't...even...anymore.

People can't even feed themselves anymore?

They are literally here, in Arizona, collecting mountains of food to hand out because during this assinine teachers strike they are claiming many of these kids ONLY eat the two meals schools provides them and with the strike, they are going hungry. Some schools are keeping cafeteria open to feed these kids.

Seriously. I am considering moving to some small village in Eastern Europe and never looking at the news and politics again. I just want out of this insanity. It's exhausting.

Only happened to me once, as a freshman. I scraped together enough to by myself a bag of rice. And learned to budget. Never happened again.

Agree.

I walked to school also but not that far. We lived less than a half mile from the
school. In fact my grandfather donated the land on which the school was built.

Preparing and conditioning them to be lifelong dependents, instead of self-reliant. Just wonderful.

In my area (northeastern NJ) many of the jobs that unskilled young Americans worked are now done by adult immigrants - legal or otherwise. Employers don’t even want to hire young Americans.

NYC offers their school free lunch program through the summer (when schools are closed altogether); when they admit these are the only meals the kids get, they are admitting they allow them to remain in homes that would be deemed unacceptable for white children - and they are admitting non-whites in these areas are terrible parents.

Here in NJ (and most of the country, I suspect) the immigration issue has become intertwined with another conflict - that between generations. Working Americans, often childless, are taxed to death here paying for public education for primarily foreign students. The imported students are trafficked here solely to keep those schools open, and the Americans know it.

When I was in school the guy living in the trailer next door to me got on food stamps. Once a month he’d come back from the grocery with a thick stead and six of beer grill it up then eat peanut butter for the rest of the month.
